I got a new t/c encore with a muzzle loader barrel. I am going to get a new rifle barrel from mgm and can't make up my mind what caliper to go with for deer. I have a bolt gun in hoosier so I have everything to load for 358 hoosier. I like the wide range of bullets with the maxi. I never shot or had any experience with the maxi though. But like the performance of the hoosier. My son pretty much took over my 358 and I use my 500 s&w hand rifle. I like the break action type gum myself. So many ways I could go. 357 max,44mag,450 bush,358 hoosier 358 wssm, and the list goes on. So what do u guys think I should do and go with...thanks

I love the 444s after there shortened. If I wanted over the counter I think I would go with 460

450 Bushy would be tough to do with break action with the greatly rebated rim and most will not even think of chambering a wsm or wssm in a breaker gun either.
I would go with the Hoosier especially since you are already set up for it.

Since you have everything for the Hoosier I would go that way. But like I said. If you want something different or over the counter. The 460 Smith is a good round.

358 win. shortened to 1.8, 358 Hoosier or 460 S&W. I have a bolt gun in 358 Hoosier that I use for the long range deer hunting and a Rossi lever in 454 for shorter stuff. I also have a encore with the 460S&W barrel but I shoot the 454 casull in it which I like to use more than the 460 round. The 460 with the 200 grain ftx hasn't went thru a deer yet and I have shot 3 with it. And the meat damage from the 460 is amazing. At least on mine, if your not careful ,it will tag your eye brow.
Now the 454 will do thru and thru's thru bone on both sides. Not sure of the bullet weight but its a Hornady hollow point. I think they are 240grn xtp.
A freind of mine is getting a 358 win barrel from MGM. He is going to do the 358 win 1.8. We have done the research and the short neck wont be a problem.

Load that 460 with Barnes bullets and you will likely stop using the 454's in it. Solid copper bullets plow right through bone and do a lot of damage to the vitals with surprisingly minimal damage to meat. I shoot Barnes out of my smokeless muzzleloader and 358 WSSM for that very reason.

I like barnes copper bullets for a lot of my hunting guns. Especially for the situations where I don't know if the animal will be close or a few hundred yards out. No issues of a Barnes copper bullet exploding and not penetrating, or not getting a pass thru shot on a close deer (like I had happen to me with my .257 Weatherby at 80 yds in Wisconsin). With that shot, I watched the deer run and fall over 100 yds away, but there was no blood trail at all until the last 10 yds. Not even at the impact site - only hair. That was a IIRC 115g NBT in the lungs at a downward angle as the deer was in a gully and I was up on the ridge.

Only problem is it didn't give me time to save up cash for a good scope. Now I need good ideas on a good scope. Thinking about going with a Redfield revenge model. Normally I go with a 3-9. But thought about 4-12.

I have one that has graduations in it and it works pretty good with the different ranges. Zeroed at 100 and then figured out where the other marks are close to 150, 175 etc. Its not exact but its close enough.

Unless you really are going to shoot at some real distance 3-9X will serve you fine. I think the Revolution is all they are making now - which would be fine.

I was going to say to wait until we see how this HPR bill pans out, but I see you've already made your purchase. You can guarantee that the law will change anytime I buy something. Lol! I just bought a .357 Mag rifle and sent the barrel off for reaming to .357 Max, only to find out I should have held off. Now I'll probably be buying a .25-06. Lol!

Well I guess I'm already ready. I bought a 308 barrel at the first of last year when I thought the HPR was going to pass. So I'm ready ether way. More than likely just use the Hoosier if the Bill goes threw. It's all the gun i need where I'm hunting.

I bought a .300 Blackout when the DNR was taking comments about allowing HPR's. When that failed to be adopted, I sold it and bought the .357 Mag. Now it appears that I jumped the gun again. I should have just kept the .300 BLK. Lol!
