I don know if this is the correct thread or not.
Is the any restrictions on cartridges for the new rifle bill. Like hollow point, full Metal jacket, or how many grains.
I just ordered a Savage axis II xp in .308. I wanted to know before I start buying round to see what it likes best.
Thanks

Most likely FMJ bullets would not be legal to hunt Deer. I've found the best bullet, for the .308, is a 150 grain soft point; I like Hornady's Spire Points type bullets. or Sierra's 150 grain S.P.B.T. using either IMR-4064 or Varget powders.

You can shoot whatever you want, just use softpoints for hunting. Practice with the cheap stuff and get used to the rifle.

So no to the army surplus rounds You can pull the F.M.J. bullets and replace them with the [SAME] weight and diameter of the military bullet. I've done this with 7.62 X 39 m/m military ammo & replaced the military bullet with a soft point bullet, of the same weight & diameter.

Think of archery hunting. Would a person hunt deer with field points? Same with hunting with FMJ. Besides from being illegal, they don't expand and the expansion and resulting shock is what helps put animals down. Then the blood loss kills 'em.
That is unless you are head/spine shooting them. Then the deer is down but still might require another shot to finish it off.
BUT, I'm an accuracy nut, and let the rifle tell me what weight and mfg. of bullet it likes. My .308 is really, really accurate with 168g Sierra Matchking bullets, but it is also really, really accurate with 180g Nosler Accubonds. Liter bottles at 300 yds are first shot hits.
