I shall read this in the morning, but one thing that has always stuck with me, being an avid Civil War buff, is that the men that actually fought the war believed it was for the state's rights. Read about the Black Hats of the Iron Brigade and their personal letters home reflect this. Also search veteran's reunions on YouTube. These gentlemen in their 80's and 90's were recorded saying the same things.

Of that I will say this... What soldiers believe they are fighting for and what the underlying cause of the conflict is are not necessarily synonymous.
Union soldiers, nearly to a man, would have said they were fighting to restore the Union, but that was not the cause of the war. Secession started the war, but did not cause it. It was a symptom of the disease. In my humble opinion.

Love the Civil War. Had a great time in Gettysburg last summer. Heading to Charleston this summer to check out some more Civil War spots That's a great place! If you have a day to spare, I highly recommend visiting the state capital at Columbia, SC. The tours are free and very informative. The grounds and buildings are amazing. And then if you're into some southern comfort food, hit Docs BBQ and Southern buffet!

Charleston is awesome! Was just there in Feb. Visit the old market sheds on the west end is the confederate museum or history. Also, sort of in the center of East Bay Street, and it is under renovation is one of the oldest custom buildings in the US. The basement was used as a prison during the English occupation of the city. I spent a week in Gettysburg last October, and we to the short drive to Antietam in Maryland. Well worth the trip, and I highly recommend a battlefield guide for 3-4 hours!

I agree. I had a one on one guide and it was well worth the money. A lady here at school went when the leaves were off the trees said it really help her to see the lay of the land as to when leaves were on. She had only been there with the leaves on in the past.

Charleston is steeped, not only in Civil War history, but also Revolutionary War history...not to mention 20th Century warfare with the naval yard museums. Historian's playground. I recommend staying out on Folly Beach, cool little beach town vibe just a few minutes drive from Charleston.

Thanks got it on the list. I see there is a new Civil War movie coming out called Free State of Jones inspired by true events staring Matthew McConaughey.
