Do you fellas ever think about giving these things away to poor hunters? I'm not talking about me, but I sure know a few. I'm too poor myself to give away big ticket items. Lol!

Personally I would skip the Savage and go with an Encore frame and a custom barrel for the Encore in the caliber of your choosing. IMHO, Savage smokeless ML's, while being a well made rifle as is typical with Savage, are just too darn finicky. Couple of screws that have to be just so so or accuracy goes out the window.
I went the Encore route and with the help of a good friend who had been down the smokeless road before it was a pretty painless process getting to the point of having a consistent MOA ML rifle.
Doug's message board has be mentioned and while I have not been to the site in some time now it was always THE place to go for info on a smokeless ML rifle.

No more than I use a muzzleloader, I definitely don't want to get wrapped up in Encore frames and custom barrels. I normally don't hunt muzzleloader season at all, unless I'm still trying to get a buck. And now that I can use a HPR, I won't even use a muzzleloader during the general firearms season. So, it might see a hunt or two every few years.

I've got a CVA Optima black powder ML with a stainless barrel and it is easy to clean. Takes me no more time to clean the CVA ML than it does to thoroughly clean one of my HPRs.
I don't think I'll be spending $5k on a Bad Bull ML anytime soon. But I'll also admit I have yet to be granted access to hunting ground where I can take a 300+ yard shot.

If youre not hearing much about them you arent listening in the right places .... go to dougs message boards. There are guys on this site that have them too, me included. I have 2 of them. I've been there at that site and was even a member. I remember when this issue of a Savage blowing-up on Toby Bridges, an outdoor writer and muzzle loader expert. Got a Friend that knows him personally. As for me: I believe I'll just stick to my T/C .50 cal. Black Diamond using Triple "7" FFG powder. Cleaning the T/C is no issue and one has to clean a M/L that uses smokeless powder too. I simply first run a patch moisten with HOT water, wiping out residue, then dry patch, then a patch with gun oil. On average I use a Muzzle Loader around 5-times per season. I like using my .308 or .270 much better.

Itching to try mine out this year. Remington 700ML with .458 Shilen barrel. Shooting Hornady Muzzleloader MonoFlex bullets custom sized. And it will put them through the same hole at 100 yards. The past few years I had been using my Encore with a converted 45/70 barrel fitted with a Savage Muzzleloader breech plug. It would shoot saboted Barnes .40 195 grainers into 1/2 and inch at 100 yards. The Encore is MUCH lighter to carry, but I wanted to try my hand at shooting sabotless. The Remington is a 13# gun without the bipod. I am going to start working on a reduced load for the Encore so that my 10 year old daughter can use it.

What exactly is a smokeless muzzleloader? You shove Chantix down the barrel instead of powder....

Can you actually use blackpowder in a Smokeless gun? Yes but why use black powder in a firearm designed to use smokeless powder? I've been tempted to load up my .44-40 Rossi lever action using Triple "7" but found out that I'd get the same performance using Unique or IMR-4227 powders and a lead 200 grain cast bullet. So I never tried using Triple "7" in my Rossi. Now if I had a single shot chambered for a .44 Magnum or .45-70 I believe one could have some fun loading them up with Black powder or one of the powders made for M/L's.

Colorado, and other states, do not allow smokeless.....that is one reason a person might want to shoot black or substitute out of one.
