Told momma I was going out to the ice house for a bit, pretty sure I heard her call me a ICE hole!!! That's okay, because I caught 5 of these bad boys but had to turn them all loose because we have a slot limit. Biggest was 26, smallest was 23.

Nice catches Budd. I'm very jelous. My outdoor adventures have transitioned from hunting to ice fishing in the past few weeks. We have had some good ice here in northern Indiana for the past month. I've had some decent catches of panfish in the past couple of weeks but have also figured out how to catch walleye through the ice. Had some decent walleye catches on the backwaters of the St. Joe River

Ice is getting thick now, for the first time this year we had to put an extension on the augers. Brian and his collage bud hit the bluegill lake and I went for walleye on a different lake. The gill lake is a special reg lake were you are only allowed 5 gills each.

Why only 5 Bluegills?

Same question here, and what is the makeup of the other species in the lake? How many did they have to sort through to get those 10 Bluegills of that size?

Small lake, only 2,255.00 acres. Small lakes like that can be cleaned out quickly when people find them. I’m good with the 5 fish limit, plenty of bigger lakes if your looking for larger limits. 10 minutes or less you have your limit with some better than a pound each.

There was no sorting, I fished that lake about 10 times last winter and MAYBE threw 1 smaller fish back. There are numerous small perch in the lake, nice crappie, few northern, some large mouth, also heard of a couple people catching walleye in there.

Doesn't your state have a daily limit on bluegills?

20. But close to half the lakes have special regulations on them for various fish. Reasons for this is let’s look at Red Lake, 288,800 acres. It got completely fished out of walleyes, walleye fishing was stopped on the lake for a number of years to bring the population back through stocking. In the meantime the crappie flourished until they were discovered, I was lucky to get in on the action but they finally got wiped out, can still catch the occasional crappie but I have not heard of anyone catching a limit the last few years. People that could see the schools of crappie from the air said it was half mile wide by a mile long.....now gone.

Indian's commercial fishing.....but it was all U.S. anglers that wiped out the crappie on red. U.S. citizens are only allowed to fish about a quarter of Red Lake. The walleye population is very good now, Red Lake reservation is commercial fishing again but they are monitoring it better this go around.
