Just got home from a one day perch fishing trip on Lake Erie aboard Eagle Eye Charters, I fished with 5 other fine gentleman which included Schall53 from this web site.
Our Captain Bob Hainer explained to us that for the last 3 days the Walleye fishing had been off the charts and limits could be had in just a matter of hours if we wanted to fish for Walleye, we put it to vote and decided we wanted to fish for perch instead because man does not live by walleye alone and perch are selling for $18.00 a pound if you were to buy them at the local fish market in Port Clinton.
We started out the day with a good breakfast which we shared along with several charter captains.
At 7:00 we left the dock headed to a spot that had been producing but yesterday was not one of those days, after about 1 hour of poor results we headed to an area right on the Canadian border and there we stayed for the rest of the trip parked on top of huge schools of perch that were suffering from "lock jaw" but there wasn't another boat in site all day long.
It was a slow but steady pick of JUMBO perch, at 1:30 pm after sitting in the sun without a cloud in the sky or a breeze of any sorts when we decided to call it a day besides we were just about out of bait but we had exactly 160 perch that weighed 69 pounds at the cleaners. This catch produced approx.35-40 pounds of fillets of which each man took home about 5 pounds of fish plus we took a 5 pound bag to a local restaurant that cooked them up for us in several different ways and we ate perch till we could not eat another bite.
After we got off the boat from fishing we returned to the beautiful home our captain puts us up in where we ate white tail deer sausage, white tail deer garlic and cheese sausage along with shall's homemade Wyoming Mule deer Pastrami which is fantastic, we also ate various cuts of cheeses and garden fresh tomatoes washing it all down with one of schall's 2 favorite brands of beer that being Labatt Blue.
Now all of us on this trip have cleaned more fish then one can imagine but on our Lake Erie trips we pay a fish cleaning business to clean and package our catch so we can enjoy the finer things in life.
Today when I got home I checked yesterdays fishing reports and found that it was one of the most nonproductive perch fishing trips for just about everybody and I can tell you as we motored back from the border we passed probably a hundred boats that we could see.
The moral of this story is.......fish with a great charter captain and enjoy the friendship of other good fisherman and that is exactly what we did.
Schall I look forward to fishing with you again next year.
