Started last March with an excavator....took about 15 hours to rough clear the area for the new food plot.
Found a few sheds while doing the initial work. The river had been up and pushed deer to the higher ground. Must have just been perfect timing for dropping.
18" ruler.
Tractor, grapple and box blade were needed next to take the plot from roughly cleared to ready for seed. You don't realize how rough it is till you try to smooth it out. Roots. Ruts. Made that suspension seat on the tractor work.
Some disc work to finish up getting it ready...
Finally time to get some seed in the ground. I didn't come prepared to plant because I was thinking of waiting another week but the weather was perfect with rain coming the next day. I decided to use what I had handy and used an old fridge to drag in the seed.
August 30....deer have found the new grub and are having at it. Growth is only a few inches tall but is still a strong draw.
Easton getting ready for his first youth season. We aren't sure at this time what he will be using so practicing with everything. Crossbow and rifle.
It's finally time for season...mom goes with us on the youth hunts and we have a great weekend. Was hot but the nice thing about a blind is you can dress however you want. Easton's first attempt at a deer ended up skirting a tree...a place most of us have been before.
The next day turned out better...his first deer. He put a perfect shot on this doe...she didn't make it out of the plot.
Archery season starts...I don't normally hunt over the plots myself so weeks go past without knowing what or when anything is using it. As gun season gets closer and closer I start paying more attention to the plots in anticipation of getting my dad and Easton on deer.
I hunt over my other plot a few times seeing good deer each time but never having one in bow range.
Gun season starts and dad fills his tag over my other plot so I turn my attention to getting Easton his first buck. We sit over the other plot on the last weekend of firearms season and he gets his chance but isn't able to connect.
The next weekend muzzleloader season comes in and we find ourselves sitting on the new plot once again. As the sun sets he gets his opportunity and puts a Hornady bullet through a nice 9 pointer. He was and still is an excited little boy.
This one made it out of the plot...helped build the anticipation for Easton by looking for it.
Fast forward another month and we find ourselves in mid January....deer are benefiting from the work. I went down to hang a camera and saw 16 deer in the plot. Snow has been on the ground less than 48 hours.
A lot of work but worth it in so many ways.... looking forward to my next project.
