I ended up filling my buck tag on 1-4-2017 with a good mature 11 pointer. Had a tough season for getting a shooter in front of me and passed up a ton of young bucks in doing so. The last few weeks of late archery and the snow and frigid temps that accompanied it ended up working out to my advantage. I missed a really nice 7 point the evening before with my bow at 15 yds because my release froze up and misfired in the -5 degree temps and I was devastated. I couldn't believe I put all that time and effort in all season long and something so simple screwed me up! I was on a very hot feeding pattern and had 50-60 deer go by me in 2 nights going to feed so I knew I had to get back in there and hope for another chance.
The next day I dug out my Barnett Crossbow that had only been used one other time by me in the 10 or so years that I had owned it. I sighted it in and made sure it was all good to go. That night I went back, had about 20 or so does and small bucks go by me before the 11 point I ended up killing came by me.
After the shot he went about 75 yards and bedded down in the snow, plenty of blood to follow it seemed but I found 2 bloody beds and backed out for the night, dark blood liver hit I believed. I was very nervous about leaving him because I saw a pack of 4 coyotes in the woods that night before I shot him and had already killed 2 in there this year with bow and ML. Its full of em around there. My buddies son went with me the next morning and he was another 100 yards from his last bed and I was right, one lung and liver and he had expired.
It was an awesome feeling to finally put an arrow in a buck even though it wasn't from my bow, especially after grinding through all the seasons until the end. Anyways, that's my story, hope you enjoyed! Copper1
