The “safe” ice melted and then refroze with the standing water on top. That is not safe to be on. The pond levels rise and fall during the melting/refreeze as well. There may be space between the ice and water. I cringe when is see guys out on ice right now in my area.

Up here we use beaver flowages that may run for miles as a road system to run snowmobiles down while trapping/hunting. Whats dangerous is when the state or feds send people in to blow dams mid winter. I have seen places where there is 5 feet from the bottom of the ice down to the water level. Scary as sh!t when you notice it after running up the flowage for a mile or so.
