Finally got the okay from my wife to make a couple hunting trips in the next few...ish years. This is my first year buying preference points. I was smart enough to design my latest clothing setup around this type of hunting, now I just read, wait, and exercise. Oh, and decide on a million other things like bow or rifle, DIY or outfitter.
She is going to regret this decision.

I'd also start getting some Montana and Colorado deer points. You're going to want to go back!

I don't know about Montana, but Colorado the first year is expensive since you have to send in the money for the whole license, then get the $$ back except for the preference point $$. Put that away until next year and use that same $$ again.
One bucket list hunt for me is straight horned Oryx. I'd prefer to go to the area around White Sands Missle Base, or on the base itself. I believe on the base it's a once in a lifetime hunt, and I don't think it's a DIY hunt. It's been a while since I looked into it.

CO is changing it this year.. you don't have to front the tag fees anymore. Which will probably mean increased point creep. Those Oryx are cool. I drove through the missile range last month, but didn't see any.

Medic, lawrencecountyhunter is right you will want to be out here every year (main reason I am staying here ) You should also become a member on Hunt Talk (he and I both are). TONS of great information about all things related to western hunting, especially DIY public land. On top of that it is populated by a bunch of pretty mellow and very helpful folks.

A buddy and I have been buying CO Muley points every year for a while now, some areas we were looking at you needed 8 or 9 points to have a good chance of drawing.

I'm thinking about applying this year. I hunted deer in the NW corner back in 2012, I can draw that unit again (only takes 1-2 points). Just depends on the Wyoming draw.

Plenty of good places you could go next season without playing the preference points game.

Points dont bother me cause I wont be able to go for a few years anyway. Wyoming is somewhere Ive always wanted to go and they have all the animals I want to hunt so its a win for me.
