It’s not been a good day. My 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid decided it was time to chuck it’s ESAP, or electronic steering gizmo! I have been told by the local Ford dealer that it was needing service, but not a danger. Well dang near became a huge danger while driving in the construction zone on 37 today Between Bloomington and Martinsville. Ended up putting it in the dirt shoulder in the construction zone. Then I couldn’t get out. Fortunately the guys in the construction crew helped me out, pushing as we go and I babied the thing home. I’m searching the net to find a recall. So far, no success. But, a whole lot of complaints!

The manufacturer's website should have a button to click for recalls.

I work for Ford. If I recall there is a major recall on the Fusions. It's bad enough dealers are telling people to park them and not drive them until they are fixed. I know people I work with have been given loaners by the dealers to drive while they wait on the parts, which they are running short on, to come in. I'll see what I can find out today

So this is very interesting and helpful. I did a search with my VIN through Ford and it came up zero on results for a recall. And I believe it was about a year ago when I had it to Skillman Ford in Greenwood and they said no recall. And on top of that they tried to tell me that my issue was one of the front wheel bearings. Crazier yet, it took them 5 days to diagnose that!! Thanks for your help!

It doesn’t turn me away from Ford. Matter of fact, I really like this Fusion hybrid. However, I will probably try a different dealer after a bit more investigation.

I will start by noting this: Just because your vehicle does not come up with a "Recall" when searched, that does NOT mean that it may not be approved for a recall. Mind you, this job had originally been quoted as $2,594 including labor from Ford. With the help of some of y'all on this site, a friendly Chin neighbor (a mechanic for Toyata), my independent shop (Beck's Auto Service) and others, I found that the Ford Customer Service website and a few hours on the phone with their call service got the ball rolling. I told them that I am not the original owner and the vehicle has 140,700 miles. I was surprised how helpful and informative the gal was on the phone from Ford. By the end of the day last Friday she had authorized an FSA (Field Service Authorization) and opened a Case number for me to take to Capitol City Ford. She told me that if the work was approved, the mileage didn't matter since it was under 150,000 miles and the car was less than 10 years old. I dropped the car there on Monday. Tuesday, I received a call that everything was approved and the job would be completed with the car ready for pick up by Wednesday afternoon. Job complete. Not a dime out of my pocket! Everything worked smoothly and flawlessly. Drives like a new car!!! I learned a good lesson here. If ever I find a similar problem, I will also check the internet and dealer notices for a "Field Service Authorization!" I hope this might help someone else in a similar situation.

Well, 58,000 miles later and now we have the same "ratchety" sound coming from the Electric power steering rack. I pulled up this old post just so I could revisit some details on how I worked through this process of a recall. I called Ford Corporate and at first they said they would not approve another rack. I replied that this is obviously a problem that Ford has not remedied. So, they did suggest that I take it to a specific Ford dealer, assigned me a case number and have them do a diagnosis. Seems fair to me. We'll see what happens.

If so they maybe able to leverage some help also…… just saying I seen things happen when someone that owns a fleet of vehicles gets involved!

Our company, large multi billion dollar, international company, uses a leasing company for vehicles. Since this is my personal vehicle I’ll just see what plays out!

Fusion is at the dealer. The service manager said that if the Electric power steering rack is faulty, it most likely will not be covered. He said it would run about $3600 to replace it. Not what I wanted to hear. I did also inform them that I’ve noticed the noise is a little louder when braking to a stop or upon acceleration. I just wondered if the suspension, somehow compromised, could be part of the problem!? He and I agreed that we would let their technician do a full diagnosis before coming to a conclusion. I’ve looked into attempting this myself. I can get the part for around $700 and the work will be a little more than I care to take on but I’d try it. My biggest concern, from reading various forums, is the big question of how to “program” the system. That’s a huge concern from most DIYers! OTTF (onward through the fog)!

Good luck.
Over the years, we have changed a few modules and ECM's at work, that then needed to be towed to the dealer for programming we could not do. This is regarding semi's, but same principle.
Some DIY could still save you a bundle.

Anything done at a “Dealership” will cost you 50-100% more…. From my experiences!
