Is body else having coon problems or noticed an increase in their population? My cousin a half mile North has had them getting into his pigeons and has caught 9 so far. I had 1 get part way into my duck/geese building and attacked 1 of my geese, hurting it's head and neck fairly bad. I bought a couple live traps and have caught 5 in just a few days. I've had them tripping my motion light in the back yard about every night since last Spring. My neighbor 1/3 of a mile East has caught several too,he has a couple ducks. It just seems like this year there's a lot more than usual. I had to go over to the Cemetery last Friday which is only a couple of miles East and saw 4 dead ones on the road. With the fur prices way down like they are I know there aren't near as many people hunting and trapping them and I think it's letting their population get a little out of control. Maybe they need to let us hunt and trap them like ground hog or coyote for awhile. Just a thought.

I kill every Raccoon that ventures on my property. To live trap them and haul them to someplace else just isn't the answer. I give opossums a free pass because they are great tick eaters.

I’m up to 8 coons and 2 opossums near my chicken coop in a couple weeks time. No free pass for any of them.

My neighbor is re-doing his chicken coop. So coon trapping (around the coop) has been put on hold. So far season total is 25 coon, 7 opossums that have been trying to get into the coop.
Buddy in Texas was going through 100# of corn every 2 days in his feeder. He started in on the coon, and he's up to 9 and counting. He is now going through 100# of corn in 7 days.....

That's the way it use to be anyway if I remember right.

I see at least 2 new kills on the road to work every day for the last 2 weeks since the little ones have out and aboot. Coons are enemy #1 here and at my parents place. Grinners sometimes get a pass.

According to this they can be released in the same County but the DNR prefers they're humanely killed to stop the spread of disease. So I guess I'll go back to killing them. I killed the first 3,the 2 today were the only ones I've released. www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3364.htm

The turkey vultures gotta eat too!
I figure that with the huge increase in 4 legged ground predators and the increased pressure on ground nesting birds (turkeys, etc.) that the less coons there are the better off the birds would be.

I’ve went from skunks to coons. .22 does wonders and the vultures clean up.

I got another big male this morning but the other trap had all the bait cleaned out and it wasn't tripped. I've got to either come up with a better quality trap or improve the 1 I have. The larger trap that I've caught most of them in has an aluminum trigger plate not much stronger than a pop/beer can and an aluminum trigger rod. Every 1 I catch tears the crap out of them. They rip the plate right out of the bottom of the trap and bend the heck out of the rod. Plus they bend the heck out of the rod holding the back door in place. I'm surprised I haven't lost any. Every time I've got to bend everything back, which I can do with my hands-no tools required, then refasten them.

get ya some dog proof traps. I agree, but the coon will get wise to them too. I have caught coon, feral cats and opossums in them using dried dog food.
