Nope. I go for the vitals, if possible. But I'll take the head shot if that's what I have to do. Out of all the game I've hunted the last 48 years the only game I DON'T take head shots on are deer, they've got quicker reflexes than all the others it seems. Vital shots on squirrels damages too much meat for me but that's my choice. Good luck this year. Head shots are a much better percentage of DRT (dead right there), but I don't feel that I lose that much if the only shot I have goes through a front leg. I've had many head shots turn into neck or vitals shots when the squirrel moved as I was breaking the shot. I honestly would be happy with just the back and hind legs off of my squirrels. I, too, will pass on head shots on deer unless they are at 30 yards or closer and it's a doe or button buck.

I've never shot at the head on a deer and doubt I ever would. I don't care about antlers so the age or sex wouldn't matter. I did take a neck shot on the big 12 pointer I had mounted though, that's the only shot I had

I don't mind losing the front legs too much. For me right now it's more about the hunting success than the amount of meat I get. Deer - won't take a head shot unless I'm hunting at home. At home we have only 7 acres and it's in a rectangle that's just a few hundred feet wide. The neighbors on both sides and another next-door neighbor are NOT trustworthy at all, so I'd rather not have a deer run onto their properties. Our property is narrow enough that we had to place our stand literally inches from the property line (we are careful about not shooting over the property line not just because of the law, but because of well, neighbors who aren't nice). If a deer is standing under that stand and gets shot, it can run about 80 yards before crossing the next property line. So this is the only situation in which I will take a head shot on a deer. As for squirrel hunting, probably a no go now on our property because it takes us literally walking the property lines, and our next-door neighbor is one that we really don't want to shoot a gun where he can see us, which is along the first 20 or so yards of our trail. And we don't have a woods other than a small plantation. We also don't really want to be squirrel hunting in our yard because not only might crazy guy start doing something annoying (like blasting really loud music to annoy and bother us on purpose), but we enjoy watching the squirrels in our yard.

Took a walk with the wife down a heavily timbered road. Lots of oak and walnut. Skurries galore this morning! Probably seen close to 20 in a half mile stretch.
