Recently, I inherited a very fine .22 rifle, the Anschutz Model 54 Sporter. Thanks to esshup, I've already gathered some good info! It is missing the front sight. I guess the previous owner topped it with a scope. I'm not sure what I will do regarding sights. Maybe use one of my better scopes? Not sure yet. As always, I'm open to feedback and suggestions. The bluing is beautiful. The walnut and finish are immaculate!

That rifle looks to be in great shape!
I honestly can't tell you how many rounds I put through the Model 54 1413 rifle that I shot for a few years in college while on the ROTC rifle team. I'm guessing that it was between 30,000 and 40,000 rounds since I was shooting a minimum of 500 rounds a week and during winter break I didn't stop practicing. Never a hiccup, I would just clean and oil it after shooting every day. The one that I shot was the one with the butt hook, aluminum rail under the forearm to attach the sling to for prone and kneeling, remove the sling and attach the adjustable palm rest for shooting standing position. I did purchase an adjustable iris type rear sight and a different front sight that allowed me to adjust the size of the front peep (with inserts) and also add colored inserts in it for better contrast between the black target and the light tan paper (the paper that the targets were printed on wasn't white). Somewhere I think I still have some of the targets that I shot.
That rifle of yours will be around for a long, long time if you take care of it. It had to be set away and not used for a long, long time. Did you find out what year it was made?

I've done a bit of research and I can't say for sure but it might be 1970. Apparently, Anschutz can be a dilly to date. The serial number on this rifle is 862XXX A. I have found a few notes online that say the 'A' denotes a '0' (zero) and that might suggest the year 1970. I'm not positive on this but it's the closest I've come via serial number lookup. A fellow on another forum sent me a link that shows how I can get my Anschutz dated by sending information and photos to Germany. The cost is 150 Euros. That's too steep for my blood just to date a rifle.

Are there any other numbers stamped in the barrel? I'm seeing for instance if there's a 72 stamped in the barrel that was 1972.

I read some notes on other forums that mention the date may be stamped as you noted. And, a lot of other guys are similar to me with no date like '70' or '72' or whatever year stamped. There is a funny looking triangle with something that looks like the number 1 inside the triangle.

Hey salty, What scope is that? Leupold 3X9 Hey salty (or esshup or anybody else if you see this), I'm trying to figure out how to remove the barrel from the stock. There are 4 screws holding the plate and trigger guard on but I can't figure out how to remove the 4th screw as indicated here where I am pointing with the small screwdriver. I don't want to scratch the bluing or the stock so I'm guessing there might be some trick to it? I'll also text you both the pic.

Greg google master hopper, it’s okay if someone actually has real life experience they remember and share instead of googling it and posting it up as quickly as possible.

No one said it wasn’t Dave …. Larry asked for an answer and I answered it just like what was asked thank you very much! As I stated I wasn’t trying to steal anyone’s thunder by answering the question only being helpful. BTW….. it’s also ok to goggle a question when asked.

As far as I’m concerned, you didn’t steal, anybody’s thunder! I wasn’t a bit surprised when I seen da Gregster reply with a quick answer!🤠 The funny thing is, I had googled for an answer, but I didn’t come up with the same bit of information on rimfire as you did Greg. So I was happy to see your feedback! Heck, I’ll take all the help I can get!
