Have you seen the video of the Baltimore bridge collapse when hit by container ship? Pretty horrific, I'm sure they will be trying to figure out lives lost, damages, reasons, etc. for some time.

Very strange..
I had a dream last night. I was driving across the bridge between Henderson and Evansville headed north.I looked over the side and there was no water but there were three cars on the river bottom. Then I woke up. Not claiming any prophecy just noting the weirdness of it.

Hard one to take either way you look at it. Bad way to go in my opinion especially in cold water but any water would be unpleasant to say the least. A few different perspectives to consider... Obviously the people on the bridge that endured the pain and suffering along with their families, then there's the boat captain and the company that will deal with the fault or at least most of it, lastly the locals that counted on that bridge to get from one side to the other, I realize this pales in comparison to what has happened but as Woody mentioned the Ohio River bridge between Evansville and Henderson Kentucky, I have family on the other side, anyone commuting from work to home would be greatly inconvenienced by not having that bridge for the time it would take to replace it. There would be people that would either have to move or get a new job without that bridge. Again the loss of life overshadows the inconvenience but it would be a BIG deal here in the Evansville area.

At some point, it's time to drop the anchors and stop drifting…. geez!

The bridge just dropped like a pile of toothpicks. That's crazy!

The ship should also had a local pilot on board to guide them. The ship lost power at least twice from the video that I saw, power and lights. The ship radioed the bridge to stop traffic the first time it happened. I guess the road crew that was fixing potholes on the bridge didn't get the message. It was said that the bridge was built before they started putting concrete reinforcements around the parts that anchored it to the bottom of the river, but I also read where if they would have done that it wouldn't have helped anyway. The same ship IIRC 2 years ago hit a dock in the Netherlands or some place like that. The video that Greg shared isn't in real time - it's sped up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZbUXewlQDk

A lot traffic will now have to go 695 west to get back to 95 north especially if their hauling hazmats.

It's not the 1st time that ship has hit bridges! Weird how it turned right into it.

A computer hack? Hard to tell in these days.

I seriously doubt that it was hacked or on purpose. The ship is a single screw ship, when you try to reverse them they tend to pivot. They also had the port (left) anchor dropped but it didn't catch.
I can't even begin to figure out how many hours I've spent driving a boat with an inboard engine. You have to really finesse it to make it back up the way you want. If you hammer the throttle in reverse it turns the way the prop is turning no matter what you do with the rudder.

Heard about it on the news. Haven't read much but enough to know what's going on. The sped-up video above is the first one I've watched. However the shop would have had to be going a pretty decent speed to make the bridge collapse. From the video too it looks like it hit the bridge smack dab on one on the supports, and at an an angle such that the majority of the force could really only go right into that support and throughout the rest of the bridge. Looks like the angle could be figured out via video. If anyone knows the speed of the ship I bet we could figure out how much force that ship put through that bridge. The kinetic energy that ship had while moving was transferred to the bridge, which is stationary and quite solid. This normal force from the bridge was able to stop to the ship, but the ship's kinetic energy was so great that it overcame the normal force and down came the bridge. If you look carefully at the video you can actually see a ripple go through the bridge in the milliseconds before it collapses.
Sorry, I'm in an Introductory Physics class right now and I couldn't help but notice that moving ship + stationary bridge = a relatively simple physics problem. That is, when you don't take into account other forms of energy and other things that may be going on.

When fully loaded the Dalai (that ship) can weigh 116,000 tons. It is said that the ship struck the bridge at 8 knots or 9 mph. That should give you enough data for a theoretical calculation. The ship was loaded with containers, but I don't know if they were full or empty.
