Add me to the list of self-taught hunter. My Dad was/is an avid fisherman, but wasn't too much into hunting by the time I came along. He was in his 30's when I was born, so I was the rabbit dog for a few years as a youngster, then he just stopped hunting.
Dad gave me a really nice stainless Beretta .410 at age 13 and I took it from there myself. Hunted rabbits and squirrels after school and on weekends. Never went deer hunting until 15 years later in 1994 when we needed the meat due to my being out of work due to burns received in a garage fire. Borrowed a 20ga Mossberg and bought 2 boxes of shells and off I went. Been hooked ever since. Funny how such a bad event in my life led me to one of my greatest pleasures.
Sad to say that Dad and I have never hunted together (with both of us carrying a gun) though I have tried several times to get him to go with me and his grandkids.
So, as many of you can see from my posts and pix in here, I have done all I can to pass on my love and admiration of the great outdoors to my 4 children. We scout, hunt, track, kill, carry, dress and process all our game together as a family with everyone pitching in. I know that none of my kids will ever have an excuse for going hungry.

I see no hunters in alot of families, same here for the most part. My moms' dad taught me to shoot an old.410, that is in my gun case. We hunted groud hogs and chipmunks at their house. He also taught me to fish. I have posted this before, but my dad was not allowed to hunt or have a gun. He uncle was killed in a hunting accident while crossing a fence. It was my granmas' brother when he was 14. When I showed interest, my dad hooked me up with a neighbor(who happens to go by "Mad Mallard" at HH.com). He took me hunting. Also another friend of my dads' showed me some things. Once I was a teenager it was a buddy of mine and his dad...... Solohunter
