Good News - I saw one yesterday a 1/3 mile from my house. It flew over my car. I hope there is a nesting pair. Since I was driving I could not get a picture. What county please?

Ya'll might want to watch the NRC meetings this year also. Don't forget they postponed the license increases earlier this year until after the legislature was over (no new taxes).

Hatchetjack, Thank you very much! It's appreciated. Jim Keep in mind I don't describe myself as a "deer hunter". I'm just a hunter and fisherman.

Next session is a short one. I think all the fireworks will start in September with the summer study which they move around the state. The treehuggers will want to tell the legislature how the forests should be run and their ideas do not benefit the bulk of the folks on this site.
So you getting that rifle ready yet? I was out all day sighting in my turkey gun and scouting. Friday was all day meeting with state and national forestry people.

Bill and I are old farts. We only get on the Internet a couple of times a day (or week) so we may not seem to be here as often as others. The bill now goes to the Governor. By the way the rifle portion of this bill is likely the least important to DNR as the rest of the bill. Glad to see this session end. The next session will be a doozy. I spent all day in Forestry meetings.

Indiana Wildlife Federation did object to no upper limit on cartridges and amendment was passed that sent bill back to appropriations because the vet license was going to cost ~ $600k to the DNR. The bill likely will still pass without any changes to the rifle section. The vet license will likely be modified to what already exists.

The 2 houses are about to exchange bills this week. Fortunately, it appears only a couple of bills made the cut and will proceed.
SB256 is a Senate bill that allows non-voting members of the Benjamin Harrison trust to actually attend meetings and vote. Really an oversight in my opinion. Passed Senate 48-0
HB1415 is a House bill generated by DNR to clean up statutes and make mminor changes. OF interest in this bill is modification of the rifle rule which will include anything from.243 and up as a legal rifle caliber. Passed House 81-7
HB1089 is a House bill that restricts local governments regarding timber sales. Prohibits a unit (a county, city, town, or township) from regulating the sale or removal of merchantable timber from private property. Prohibits a unit from charging a person who sells or removes merchantable timber from private property a fee or requiring a bond for a road cut or other access to a highway that exceeds a fee or bond that the unit requires for new commercial construction. The county in question is Monroe County and their restrictive attempts to prevent landowners from harvesting timber. Paased House 69-25

Overall I'd say crowds were down. Same stuff, different year.
Beer is $8, polish sausage is $9 and hamburgers require a cosigner...parking is still $5

There is an issue with the bill but it has nothing to do rifles. I'll keep you informed when I can say more.

Found the email:
"While we are still screening the reports, we have had 45 hunting incidents with 26 involving tree stands. The majority of our tree stand accidents involve lock-on stands with the primary cause being broken straps. We will continue to stress the importance of checking your equipment on a regular basis which we hope will reduce this number. While we have always emphasized the need to conduct these inspections, repetition is what will eventually win out on reducing the overall impact."
They are still looking at the number of firearms accidents but no fatalities. There is at least one crossbow accident, too.

How many accidents/incidents involving HPR's were there this past season? Just curious. No, I don't own any nor do I plan to buy one. To the best of my knowledge, ZERO accidents occurred while hunting with an hpr this past season... If someone knows differently, please correct me. There were quite a few treestand accidents but no fatalities this year due to fall. Some firearms accidents (<10) but none with a rifle. I asked Colonel Danny East and the Lt. Col of Law Enforcement about a month ago. Email is around here somewhere.

So does mean the S&W .460 can come out? I believe the .460 S&W Magnum is currently legal in both handgun and rifle. Its case length is 1.800 inches and its bullet diameter is considerably greater than .357 inches. stevespages.com/jpg/cd460s&w.jpgYou're right, Bill. It's already legal.

The bill has only passed the House Natural Resources Committee. Still has to pass the full House, Senate Natural Resources Committee, and full Senate before it can go to Governor. It could be killed anywhere along the line. Don't go out and buy that S&W .460 yet And this can be amended some more too, right? Yup. That's what happened last year.
