*UPDATE* If these warm temps keep up I may have to accelerate my "planting" schedule , as long as it doesn't rain before the weekend I'll be firing up the shredder and the tiller to do the soil ammendment for the plot . I have lots of duff all over the yard to grind up , there's even plenty on the patio begging to become 'shroom food . I've decided on a plot size of 4'x4' as reccomended in the package literature , and I''ll mulch lightly with shredded leaves once the spawn has been interred .
I'm also planning to transplant my asparagus bed from my other house while I'm at it , as long as my dogs are guarding the 'shrooms they can guard those too . Spring just ain't Spring for me and the wife without those tasty spears , and with a little luck the 'shrooms may come up at the same time . If the morel kit works out I'll look into planting some other varieties later on .
Hey Raporter , if I toss in some shiitakes can I use the Doghouse too ? ;D

Interested to see how this works Kevin1...good luck. Are you trying morels as well? Morels are what I'm planting , and if they work out well I may branch out into other 'shroom types . No , not those 'shrooms . LOL I'll keep updating on this thread as I go along .

I spoke to a guy at the Louisville boat and sport show Friday that had a "mushroom booth" and he said the morel kits work pretty well, but remember to water with rain water. The chlorine in "city water" kills mushroom spores. Thought I'd pass it along. Larry Lonik?

I think Larry is dead. Either last year or the year prior.

*UPDATE* Well , I got a later start than expected , but the 'shrooms got "planted" today .
The day turned out so nice by Noon that I got a severe case of Occupationalis Optical Rectosis and came home early . Shortly after arriving at the the house I grabbed my hula hoe and prepared the bed for the spawn . I made the bed 2' x 4' for ease of maintainence , the ground I had chosen was nice and soft from where firewood had laid and rotted so the job went quickly . The spawn media was like peat moss , I spread it by simply crumbling it over the soil , then mixed it in with the soil . After applying the media I sprinkled a very light layer of hardwood mulch over it to preserve soil moisture . From this point forward my maintaninence will be limited to keeping the bed weed free and occasional watering , although I may apply a light mulch of shredded hay later to exclude weeds .
More updates to follow .
