First Madison and I thank you all for a wonderful time. Look forward to next year. Ok my question is, do I purchase a marlin 1894 44 with 3-9 scope or a savage 220 youth 20ga with scope. A friend here suggested the 20 ga, but I figured you guys would know best Again thanks and God Bless

I believe the rifle would be a lot better choice.

I have a Marlin 1894 chambered in .357 and it is great for hunting in the woods w/ relatively short shots. I recent put a Millet red-dot scope on it for low-light hunting conditions. This is what my kids will be using in a few years. The same set up in .44 mag would also be great. However, I am hearing the Marlins coming out of the factory have been having some QC issues, and production has been temporarily stopped. I would look to try find a used Marlin that is at least a few years old, or look at the Winchesters. I know someone who had a Puma in .44 mag, which are top eject (i.e. - you can't put optics on them). We lowered the sight as far as we could and it was still hitting too high. He ended up selling it and buying a Handi-Rifle in .44 mag (single shot) and putting a scope on it. This setup would also be good for a young hunter.

Marlin was bought by Cerberus and transfered most of their mfg to Remington's NY plant. Since then there has been nothing but problems with them. There is a whole forum on Marlinowners about the issues and they have even temporarily stopped production on several of the Marlin models.

a thompson center pro hunter would be a good choice too. later on when she changes to a bigger gun all you have to do is buy a new barrel.

I bought my kids a Rossi Trifecta. It has a .22, 20 ga, and a 44 Mag barrel. My kids love it. I am pretty impressed by the accuracy of the 44 mag. I am shooting a 240 grain bullet and touching holes at 100 yards with a cheap scope. I think it is a great starter gun.

With the changes in cartride length for next year, is there a larger caliber I should look at? Thanks

.460 S & W would allow Madisaon to use 45 Long Colt or .454 Casuall for reduced recoil and later on the heavy full power 460 ammo. Each would require an adjustment in the scope, so they are interchangable but in a way not.

I would have to agree on the H&R .44 mag. Good little gun for the price. Can pick one up w/scope for around $330.
