As oldhoyt, I shoot Pyrodex. Mainly because I got a goodly supply when walmart was doing a seasonal close out. If I live long enough to shoot it all up I might try something else.

I shoot Triple 7 pre-formed sulfur-free pellets. Smell isn't bad and cleanup in my stainless CVA Optima is a snap. What I really like about using pre-formed pellets is: on my CVA Optima with the finger-unscrewable breech plug, I can remove the breech plug in the field and dump the pellets out in my hand to unload it without firing it.
I have read about the Blackhorn substitute, and some have said it may need a larger primer channel in the breech plug to ignite it. My Optima's breech plug has a VERY SMALL channel for the spark from the primer to travel down. Anyone tried Blackhorn substitute in a CVA Optima or other CVA ML rifles that use the same breech plugs?

After nearly 30 years of inline MLs I've tried Pyrodex Pellets and about best guess 1500++ loadings, then along came 3-F 777 powder and a farther 1000+ loadings, then God smiled on us inliners and along came BH209 and NOTHING and I do mean ABSOLUTELY NO other BP sub in my extensive experience even belongs in the same solar system as BH209. Yes IMHO it IS that good. Gone was the cursed dealing with the small rapture inducing lovely 3-shot 100yrd groups that would for no reason suddenly open up to 4-5", gone was the 6" high first shot unless you hunt on a fouled bore that plaque Pyrodex, gone FOREVER thank God, was the concrete like 777 crud ring, and also gone for ever was the SOB hard to remove breach plug.
In their place was excellent, EASILY obtained and CONSISTENT shot to shot accuracy, same POI, super easy clean up, and a decent bump in MV.
In my smokeless capable 10ML-II, 10X and H-4198 have given me excellent results. 245/250 grain bullets at 2600-2700MV and 290-300 grain bullets at 2450 average MV. But IMR-4198, VV-110, VV-120, RL-7, and SR4759 all gave quite acceptable minuet of animal accuracy out to at least 200 yrds.
