Here's the quickie version: 6 guys........ 24 mallards........ 25 minutes. No kidding..... Un-be-freakin-leavable hunt this morning. Thanks Kyle, John, Aaron, Tony, & Rusty. Don't worry Pigeon....... we were thinkin' about ya while on our hunt and we have a very special moment that was totally in YOUR honor!!!
Guys, my appologies...... I have been swamped with things to do ever since walking in from our hunt this morning, and to top it all I landed a whopper migraine while out to eat tonight. I know you all want the pics from this morning and I'll get them on tomorrow..... Very sorry but I gotta get to bed and get a few hours sleep before going into work at 2am.
Hope you duplicate this mornings shoot!!!! I'd just bring a yellow rubber ducky......I'm sure that's all the decoys you will need if it's anything like this morning. Holler at me on my cell!
BSU.

I've had exactly 24 hours to digest yesterday's hunt..... and I'm still "giddy" with that feeling that we all had yesterday. I dunno....perhaps I'm over-doing it going on and on about a silly duck hunt.....but I don't care, here's how things shook down.
I knew it was going to be a terrific day when Tony and I pulled into the gas station and the aroma of fresh baked donuts filled the air. I knew the boys would appreciate a box of glazed to start the hunt off right....little did I know that Allegiance had the same idea from a different bakery. So heck, right there we all could have went home very happy......2 dozen donuts, 6 guys......you do the math. As it figured, math would be a very important part of our morning.
The cut bean field was gushy with mud.....the quad spun it's tires as it had to haul 2 trailer loads of gear out to the depression that had filled with ankle deep water over the past week. The scouts had been watching birds sit on the new waterhole all week...and all of us were hoping that the pattern of birds dropping in for breakfast would continue for opening day. We all finished brushing up our lay-outs and we had perfect timing to watch the sun bend it's rays from well beyond the arc of the horizon into the airbrushed clouds...creating an incredible display as evidenced by the pic I took of Kyle among the decoys. We all got the official countdown to "legal" shooting light as we knew that we would have birds arriving soon after...if not prior. "We're legal!" yelled Kyle.....and the sound of shells being pumped and loaded into the chambers filled the still air. It wasn't 2 minutes later that we were dive bombed by a group of mallards. Since Allegiance (Aaron) had yet to ever bag a duck it was agreed upon in a super-secret meeting prior that he would have first shot.....so he was probably wondering why nobody was shooting as he painted his shotgun across the moving targets......eventually he mumbled "forget you guys, I'm shooting!" to himself as he rolled his first ever duck. After that shot, it was game on as report after report was followed by splashes into the shallow water. Yours truly sat there and literally just watched, never squeezing my trigger till after the 3rd wave of attacks came in. It was just too pretty to mess up with actually TRYING to kill a duck. My buds were doing a dang good job as bird after bird was dropping from flight and splashing to the ground. Finally I too took part and folded a green-head upon it's arrival to our hole.
"STOP SHOOTING!" yelled Kyle..... thank goodness that HE was concerned about limits and how many hens we could kill....because within 10 minutes we were already nearing our hen limit. After a quick retrieve we already had over a dozen dead ducks. Give it another 15 minutes and we HAD our limits! 24 mallards......25 minutes. I know that you hear stories of awesome days where guys CLAIM they could have killed a hundred ducks, but I am NOT lying...we EASILY could have killed 100+ birds in a matter of hours. At times we were standing up in the middle of the water and the ducks were still pouring into the water.
That's enough.....I don't want to bore you because if this trend continues, it's gonna be an AWESOME season with more tales like this one to follow......
I'll get some incredible......and some embarrassing pictures up later today. Till then, good shooting!
