Keep it up. Deer don't care up there. At home I see deer walk between cars and one walked right through my barn construction last year on 11/15. The place was a mess.

Little doe...Emma made a great shot and we saw several deer. Tom got his buck, clean 8 pointer, 200 pounds live weight....got it sunday evening. I got a button buck (I didn't check) and a doe sunday evening. Freezer is full and now we hunt for something for the wall..... Been seeing lots of deer activity.....

I haven't updated this in a while.... The winter and spring I have been working on my CRP buffers. Removing saplings, burning, discing, spraying cool season grasses and adding a splash of switchgrass in some areas. I also got the mineral blocks out. Some of my turnips survived the winter and are growing again....they have since bolted with their flowers already. Had me some help with the spraying.... Kids being out of school and all ....she was looking for an excuse to get outside! Looks like I still had at least one antler holding on until 3/22! This is the most deer I have even had in one photo.....I am certain they are not all does....but they are all "antlerless" now! I count 10. It's now tree planting time. I got some in the ground and others yet to do. I got 5 chestnut, 1 female persimmons, and 8 apple trees to add to accent my current collection. Gotta keep them caged though....those 10 deer will destroy a freshly planted tree in a heartbeat!

The winds wednesday evening got me....the important things are fine....but my hunting blinds took a beating! My third one...got moved 15 feet.....wind blew it off the support/leveling blocks and then pushed it back 15 feet or so....I thought for sure after seeing the others this one was toast as well.

I got my apple trees planted. Trying to get some apples into the fall for hunting season. 2 yates on M7 and 2 each of Liberty, Enterprise and Ark Black all on B118. My clover plots have become orchards now. I need to kill off the weeds/grass and try to get some clover growing again....but the trees are the priority. Hopefully they will be the long term food plot and I can just sit in my shooting house and watch in comfort and shoot one once in a while!

So 3 major things.... #1 - got my corn plots planted yesterday....still a little wet in spots. Corn seed was free and should have enough left for next year. Mowed, fertilized and the borrowed a tiller and use my old plate planter.....it ain't pretty but it gets the job done. #2 - started the shooting house rebuilds....Started using some of the reclaimed wood from some shipping crate and got the first of 2 new shooting houses started. roughly 6 x 6 with trap door entry. The first one is up and with walls, but still needs the windows and metal. #3 - that last frost hammered some of my trees....Most of my whip sized trees (chestnut and persimmons) died....They simply lacked the energy to leaf out the second time. Even some of my older trees look pretty bad, but at least survived. No signs of apples for the year - which I expected. That frost just came at a bad time as my trees had just started to leaf out...and it fried them pretty good. This chestnut has been in the ground several years and is 10 feet tall or so and the frost did a number on it....

The frost did a number on my chestnut trees also just now new leaves are coming out. Apples and pears are gone. But I have peaches about the size of marbles now. Haven't checked the persimmon trees yet but they are leafed out.

I think I lost 3 or 4 chestnut trees. No leaves yet. I lost a Crimson Queen maple. I had it covered, but 25 degrees for many hours made no difference. I think my area will be near zero mask crop this fall. There was very little to no honey flow until last week or so. Only a few tree species left to bloom. I wish 28 years ago I planted basswood trees. I think it's going to be a bad year for animals that rely on the mask crop. Farming are going to get hit hard this year in a lot of areas.

So I was out again this weekend....and it turns out my chestnut whips are not dead...as they have sprouted from the base....but I don't know if they will have the strength to survive the summer. I'm starting to think that maybe I'm not supposed to have chestnut trees. Maybe I need to look into Chinese ones. I have 2 apples out of 5 matures trees.....but other than the one apple I lost everything else looks real good. My corn is starting to pop and my MG screen was spared from the farmers sprayer.....at least this time. I look for mast to be rough as well....hopefully some of the red oaks will be fine and we will have something. My standing corn plots will be a good draw as well.....while they last. The coons and squirrels seem to get their fair share of it as well.

I've notice that one 1 of the 4. Have not checked the other three. I agree, chestnut trees are hard to grow.

I know mine are chestnut hill trees and they raise them in northern florida, so I am wondering if I just need a hardier strain. I like the idea of them being mostly native strains, but I'm just trying to feed deer. I can't keep paying $35 a tree for it to fight for a few years produce 3 burrs and then up and die on me! They seem to need more care than I am willing to give in the early stages of growth and development. I just thought they would be a nice treat for the deer...something they can't find just anywhere.

I bought 2 Dunstan chestnut trees from Rural King 5 years ago planted them by the apple trees and never did anything to them. I have 1 male and 1 female tree. The male tree is twice as tall as the female. The female has had nuts the last 2 years.

I know persimmons trees do, but this is the first I have head of chestnut trees being that way. In any case....I have had far better growth out of my apples and crabapples thus far compared to the dunstans I have planted. I don't think I will plant any more until they prove themselves to me. My orchards are fairly small so I need produces and not space consumers....

Can not view your photos. I have had that problem. I am not sure if it's file size or what. All I can do is put the links to them that I have on other forums. When I try to go the "add attachment" route - I get told that the forum has exceeded it's attachment file limit. When I go the "insert image" route - I can link to other sites, but some folks can't see the pics, while others can (not sure why). I don't use photobucket, tapatalk or the like. It's been like this for a while, and I have tried different things....I struggle enough as it is with technology and I can't use tapatalk or the like on my phone (company phone). I just started using you tube for some of my trail cam videos to post and share.... Yes, I live under a technological rock!
