I saw lilacs blooming about 80 miles South of here, that's when the bass are on the beds.
If you want to improve the genetics in the pond, those Bluegill that are really round looking? toss them back in. Keep yanking out the longer skinny ones. For instance, the two females in the lower picture of yours in the middle about 9:00. Smaller one is over the larger one.
I'll be at a customers pond in a month trying to catch a 13" Bluegill. He's got a bunch at 12" and Redear are 13". I think most of the 12" Bluegills are 2# or heavier. The Redear should be 2 1/2# or a bit heavier.

I saw a bass on a bed. Bluegills will be spawning next month. Usually they spawn here in June. A whole month early, same for the bass.

I saw a bass on a bed. Bluegills will be spawning next month. Usually they spawn here in June. A whole month early, same for the bass. The "rule of thumb" around here (S. IN), according to the old timers, is that bluegill spawn starts at the May full moon. Probably because they spawn the entire month and the full moon is a convenient topic to argue about. I cleaned a bunch of crappie Sunday that were loaded with eggs. The few bluegill did not have any.

I got fish the easy way. A buddy gave me a bag of fresh walleye fillets they caught on the Detroit R. 😉

I got fish the easy way. A buddy gave me a bag of fresh walleye fillets they caught on the Detroit R. 😉 I offered some crappie fillets to a landowner the other day. He said the only fish he eats is from Kingfish or Lond John's. I was absolutely speechless. He won't drink whiskey or eat smoked meat either, but will drink cheap beer by the gallon.

Got 8 of these today. Deeper water, worms about 4 feet deep. Couldn’t get my hand around them. All released when they’re this big.

Spent a few hrs at the spillway. Reeled in a handful of lmb, gills and yellow bass.
Found a landing net and recovered a swim bait that had only been in the water a few hours. The rocks usually take but today they were giving. Pretty sure the flow was reduced after the heavy rains and that exposed the net. It looked to have been in the water a short while.
Gills had some size but nothing like those you guys are catching!

If it's the pond that has the stunted bass, that's why they are that big. If the goal is to grow big bluegills in it, take out any bass over 14" long, leave all the small bass and take out any female bluegill you catch.

Went by myself yesterday and brought home five bass and 15 crappie. The crappie still had eggs. This spring is weird. Crappies spawn when Forsythia bloom - water temp 60-65. Bass 63-70ish typically when Lilacs bloom and BLuegills 72+ typically when cottonwoods are sending their fluff all over the place. Last 2 weeks ago in my pond I had 51°F water temp.

Fished a few hrs on Greenwood. Water temp was 64-65.
Caught a basket full of bass. 1 big gill and a decent crappie.
Bass and gill are my buddy's dinner tomorrow.
