5 years ago they found a nodule on my right thyroid. Needle biopsies proved inconclusive. Since 95+% of thyroid nodule are non-malignant we took a monitor it plan. Every six months I had an ultrasound of the nodule. No change in 5 years. However in the back of my mind there is a lingering concern. I've had a lingering sore throat and a bit hoarse lately so I thought I'd check it out.
The Lord provides and this free screening opened up at Deaconess Gateway Chancellor Center for Oncology. Great way to gets a check up. I am signed up for this Thursday. I'll let you all know how it goes.
April is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. A free screening event at Deaconess Hospital for oral, head and neck cancer is being offered on Thursday, April 18th from 5 PM to 7 PM at Chancellor Center for Oncology on the Gateway Campus. A screening can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. Oral, head and neck cancers refer tomany types of cancers but include those that arise in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lip, mouth, thyroid gland, salivary glands, throat or larynx (voice box).
Over the past decade, an increasing number of young non-smokers have developed mouth and throat cancer associated with HPV (human papilloma virus).
Additional risk factors include:
A current or former sexual partner with a history of HPV.
Having used tobacco or nicotine
Past or current heavy/frequent alcohol use
A personal or family history of cancer in the head or neck area
Unusual symptoms in the nose, mouth, lips or throat, such as a sore that doesn't heal, bleeding, soreness, any thickening or lumps, or a change in voice or swallowing
Screenings will be provided by board certified Oncologists (cancer specialists) and Otolaryngologists (ear, nose, & throat specialists).
