Senate rejects measure to help new refineries public.cq.com/docs/cqm/cqmidday110-000002531090.htmlCQ TODAY MIDDAY UPDATE June 13, 2007 – 1:32 p.m. Senate Rejects Measure to Promote New Refineries Democrats shot down today a Republican amendment to the energy bill intended to encourage new refineries and other alternatives for producing transportation fuels. The amendment, by James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, ranking Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee, would allow states and Indian tribes to opt into a new program to streamline the permitting process and provide grants for new refineries on former military bases and tribal lands. The language also would apply to advanced ethanol plants and coal-to-liquids plants that produce transportation fuels from coal. The amendment was rejected in a 43-52 party-line vote. Democrats blasted Inhofe’s idea as a giveaway to refineries that are reaping record profits because of high gasoline prices caused by the very same shortage in refining capacity that the amendment is intended to address. They also insisted — despite countless protests to the contrary by Inhofe — that the amendment would undermine environmental laws. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he hopes to wrap up debate on the legislation — an amalgam of several bills offered as a substitute to the House-passed measure (HR 6) — by the middle of next week. Here's the roll call vote. www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/ro...on=1&vote=00210

The only trump card the United States government has to play against the oil companies is nuclear power. The oil companies don't want new refineries, they like the price control that they have now. People think that ethanol and bio fuels are the answer, but the oil companies will simply cut production and that will jack up the price of the gas they do produce. The only viable energy answer we have is nuclear power. Thats what scares the oil companies.

I saw an AP piece in yesterday's Star that indicated the oil companies were specifically planning to NOT expand or build new refineries... logic being that planned ethanol production would reduce gasoline consumption by 5-15%, so there was no need for additional refining capacity... Translation: we've got consumers right where we want'em and look forward to many years of tight supply, high prices and record profits... With sky-high fuel costs, maybe something like these babies would be the direction to go for commuting... www.ccpc.net/~jaho/on3wheel.htmlI was passed on I-65 by a Trihawk on the way to the homecoming picnic this past Saturday... flew by like he was going 75+... top down and two folks in the seats... interesting rig...
