I've never been there anyone visited there or have any insight? I might swing by a few days next week and just wanted to get an idea what I am in for. It is either there, fairbanks landing, or one of the state forest over here.

Do Not go to Fairbanks or Minni Ha Ha on opening weekend of firearms. The regional manager has them set up for draw only. Only fished at Chinook and it was only fair.

Chinook is rough strip mine country. Several pits, and woods. The locals run the access roads all the time. There is a huge mine to the west and south that closed a few years back and gives the game a fair buffer area. The town of Staunton is a mile north and I-70 runs along the south edge of the F&WA its self Trapped it and fished it but never hunted it. Hillenbrant by Linton gets less attention.

thanks guys. I drove through last night and it looks like a tough place to hunt, more upland areas then woods. I am sure plenty of deer in there just hard to archery hunt.

And hard to get to if you don't know exactly how to get there...The DNR does not give directions to the check in area or even an online map!

I got ym first deer at Chinook.... when I was 13.... It is a very rough place to hunt..... and the locals act as though they own the place..... Maybe it has changed in the last 20 years.... but I remember several hunts getting ruined by dirt bikers and people riding 4 wheelers around on the flats.

Yea public land is tough, but hoping by visiting during the week will cut down on some of the BS.

I've hunted Chinook for the last six years and it's been great. I've had the two biggest deer I've ever seen in the woods under me, but couldn't get a shot. It gets little pressure during the archery season, and I avoid it during firearms just for peace of mind. I've taken several decent deer out of there, but I'm willing to walk further than most. I've watched a lot of deer at Chinook and I've seen them on every trip.
Dirt bikes and 4-wheelers aren't an issue any longer. No motorized vehicles are allowed off the normal drivable roads. The interior roads and trails are blocked to traffic. I've never had any trouble with the locals or anyone else for that matter. There is a self check-in station that is easy to find and get to.
