I gun hunt only and I always use a 50 cal. muzzle loader because I like the accuracy and the fact that I have but one shot so I make it count. This year I acquired a 410 pump and I purchased some 3" slugs. They are a very small bullet. Has anyone ever hunted with a 410 slug gun and if so how was the knock down power and the accuracy?

It's a 30 yard or less weapon!

Feather - energy-wise, a .410 slug is going to be about like a pistol round at 50 yds...
.357 w/ 158gr JHP = 428fpe @ 50 .410 w/ 1/4oz slug = 403fpe @ 50
Beyond 50, both are going to shed energy quickly, e.g you're down to like 200fpe @ 100... so if you're planning on only shots at <=50yds, both are deerkillers. Beyond that range, you'd better stick to the .50 muzzy...
Accuracy is the shooter+gun+ammo combo, so you'd just have to mark off sticks at 25 and 50 and see what kind of group the gun can produce...
FYI... make sure the gun is slug capable choke-wise... firing a slug through a full choke barrel might produce unwanted results.... ka-boom style

I know a guy who shoots slugs through a full choked 410; no KB's but the accuracy sucks.....

I think it is a terrible choice for deer. You would be better suited with your muzzleloader..

dbd - just relating that not all shotguns/barrels/chokes will shoot slugs and/or sabots safely... consider this post.... www.gatago.com/rec/guns/9759673.html"Before I got a rifled barrel for my Mossberg 12 gauge, I shot lots of lead rifled slugs through the smooth bore barrel and an improved cylinder choke tube. No problem with the gun, but of course the accuracy and range was a bit lacking. Then I tried some of the sabot slugs by BRI. After 10 slugs the improved cylinder choke tube split the long way. Ruined the tube but did no damage to the barrel. Luckily I noticed it before firing more. While the full lead bullet would slip through the choke, apparently the hard plastic sabot wouldn't compress and did some damage. Probably the advice to get a cylinder bore choke tube is very good advice. Of course, if you can spring the extra dollars, a rifled barrel meant for slugs would be best." I've seen some barrels on new guns stamped with "not for use with rifled slugs", and have heard stories similar to the one above of guys running slugs and/or sabots in older guns with variable choke or full choke barrels and ending up with a burst barrel... the original post asked the question as to whether the .410 could kill a deer, but the other issue is whether this gun (of unknown make/model/choke/barrel) can safely fire slugs... I've got an antique Stevens .410 folding shotgun with a full choke... I have no intention of ever firing a slug through it and end up with a cracked barrel or worse... Shot loads do not stress a barrel the same way a slug or sabot load does, and one cannot assume that all shotguns can fire all types of ammo safely... better to do some homework and find out before performing an experiment which might end up blowing up a gun, IMHO...

He asked me and I told him I wouldn't but he had been doing it and not had any trouble YET so I was not listened to......oh well, that's normal around home anyway so I'm used to it!

I thought everyone knew not to shoot sabots through a smooth bore, they use to say so on the box, but thats what I get for thinking. You don,t have to worry about that because they don,t make sabots in 410. They do make some 410s that also shoot 45 long colt.
