A friend of mine who just returned from an elk hunting trip scouted the farm north of my property yesterday. He found a big 8 pointer dead in the creek. He estimated that it had been dead a few weeks and would have scored ~130 inches.

Over the weekend in my area of Owen county, several deer more deer were found dead. One neighbor found a big 8-pointer and 2 does while combining beans North of Spencer. In the New Hope area, a fine 10-pointer was found by a friend of a friend. I wonder how many are NOT being found. Deer sightings by fellow bowhunters and myself are down considerably from past years. I hope much of this is due to the weather and moon phase.

Hopefully this cold snap Thurday will put and end to the biting gnats that are causing this problem.
Back about 15 years ago we had a severe case of EHD in our area. It did seem to affect the does more than the bucks or maybe there was just more does to affect. Either way the rut that year was incredible.
Our thoughts are that there were a lot less does and the bucks had to search high and low and if they found one they stuck to it like glue.

hp,
When this kind of stuff happens the rumor mill really cranks it out.
You could be right and it was blown out of proportion - then agin maybe it's worse?
It's for sure that they aren't finding all of the affected and infected deer.
Ma Nature at her cruelest.

hp, I have only reported findings that are very credible. You may listen or not to whomever, but should know I live in the area hit by EHD and can tell you it is very real. I wonder where you live by the way.

What in the heck does my place of residence(Marion county) have to do with anything? Did you see these dead deer? I close my eyes and see piles of dead deer along the creek banks of several western counties,So how many dead(BLUE TONGUE) deer have you or your contact seen? Not trying to blow your story out of the water,I'm just saying these things have a tendency to get outta control.

I figured you did not live a county struck by EHD, hence my wondering where you were from hp. Again, believe as you wish. Maybe you should contact State Biologist Mitchell in Bloomington to get his assessment of the numbers of deer dead from this disease. Then, you can dispute him if you choose.

oh, to answer you questions, I have seen 3 dead deer because of EHD and my contact(s) have seen many more than this (possibly 20+). Fire away!

Hoosier, I'm not saying that this is not a concern,It Just seems odd that folks on here will take pictures of darn near anything, but I've yet to see a SINGLE "Blue tongue dead deer". I don't bow hunt any longer but have several buddies that do,we have hunted Parke county for the last 27 yrs. And we have not found one single Blue Tongue dead deer,And we have access to lots of property,we have contact with Farmers, Land owners, other hunters, and not one single report. GO Figure!!!

This stuff can be very spotty. A herd in one area can almost be wiped out and a 1/2 mile down the road no deer are affected.
Strange stuff..

A buddy of mine found a HUGE (170+ gross) 10 pointer around Cloverdale, dead from EHD 2 weeks ago. It was on Public Land close to the park, he called the DNR and a ICO confirmed EHD.
As a bonus, they allowed him to have the rack!!!!!
