I've never used any type of fall restraint system, besides the ground. Anyhow, i'll be taking my 13yr old this year more than normal, and i wanna teach him right, but i haven't a clue on what to buy, or even what too look for. I tried one on that i got with a summit climber, i didn't do something right, anyhow i tossed it into the trash. I'm looking for something simple. I know most of you guys wear them religiously, so your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks

The best and easiest option would be to get one of the safety vests. There are many different brands at many different prices. Most of them just have snaps that you put together and then you are on your way. Just whatever you do please wear one and have your child wear one. It only takes that one time and then there are no more future hunts together.

Yep, that's what I use, it's great! I just bought one of those this year and it's a lot simpler than stepping into a tangled up 4 pt. harness in the dark. Whatever you do, WEAR SOMETHING!

My Son and I both wear the Hunter Safety System. It's GREAT and extremely easy to use. No tangled mess when you pull it from your gear bag in the dark. Snaps on quickly and gives you a real sense of security. Highly recommended.

Not all harnesses are created equal. I bought one a few years back because I finally had a stand that I didn't feel comfortable in without one. Since then I've added 2-3 more to my collection and one of the newer ones is the one I use now. I think the second one came from a climber and it was not comfortable at all.
Since I started using that first one I am tied off when I'm in a stand. I still need to get an acension rope put together for my stands but at least I'm tied off ASAP when I get to the seat.

I highly recommend a HSS vest as well, for its simplicity.

I use the one I got with my first climber, it's comfortable but the vests do look slick. I may try one sometime.

I used the ones that come with stands for a couple years but last year I got the HSS Tree Stalker and it is great. It is easy to put on and even has pockets to hold calls or whatever.

hey lugnutz, there are several good models on the market, me and my grandson wear hunter safety system vest, this company has a vest for youths too! ...one safety tip on the strap that fasten to the tree, its about four foot long, which means if not tuck away in your pocket , it could get tangled say on a four wheeler( my granson keeps losing the rubber band and i keep getting him another one for safety), i throw mine over the shoulder and wrap it up ,then i put a very big rubber band on it , to secure it and the put it in the side pocket of the vest, so its ready when i need it.. good luck ....turkey scout

Old-school here. Still using my Loggy full body harness. The vests are really nothing more than the body harness sewn into a vest with seat belt buckles for the leg loops which just makes them easier to put on. I use the climbing rope with prussic knot that came with my Summit stand in conjunction with the HSS vest. That rope with prussic knot system is about as safe as you can get. The trees I scale are usually oaks devoid of limbs the first 30 ft. or so and my anchor rope never has more than a foot or so of slack in it, even going up or coming down.

They also have vests that you can put your web harness into. I've never tried one, but I saw them at Rural King last year. I don't know how well they work, but they are a third of the price of the HSS vest. Another plus to the HSS is that they are blaze orange on one side and camo on the other and reversible so you can wear it blaze out during firearms, or at least flip it when dragging or tracking a deer, especially on public ground.

The safety system that I like is I believe called the seat of the pants. It has straps that wrap around both legs and at the waist as well as over the shoulders. Since it is light I put it on at home over my shirt and slacks and then put on my hiding camo later over it. Just fold the tree strap over the shoulder and tuck it under the waist strap. Never catches any where. I have a Hunter safety system and have found it to be uncomfortable because the leg strap snaps close between my short legs. Being vertically challenged of course. I also found it to be heavy and lacking storage. As for a linesman climbing belt or strap I have never tried one although that new hanging one seems like a good idea especially if you are hunting out of a permanent stand.
