Couldn't get out this weekend so I watched a few hunting shows on TV. It got me thinkikng......for some reason, it seems the TV deer hunters get away with a lot more movement on stand than I ever did. They draw their bow while the deer is quartering towards them; or draw while the deer is walking parallel to their stand; or they hang their bow in the tree but always see the deer in time to grab it; all without being seen by the deer. Am I the only one who can't understand how they do it? It seems the slightest movement gets me busted on a regular basis. I put my stand up high, wear camo, limit my movement, I even hold my bow in my lap most of the time so I don't have to reach for it when they sneak in behind me. Maybe it's my imagination.

A lot of the movements you see of TV are B footage or staged filming.
A lot of the movements you see of TV are B footage or staged filming.
Yep.... they film the drawing and a lot of times the actual shot after the deer has been harvested.... that is how they get away with all t he movement..... there is not actually a deer then when they move around that much.

Yes, there is definately a ton of staged shots in those shows! I've seen a guy wearing 2 different hats while supposedly harvesting the same deer! I guess they aren't aware of continuity?

BINGO! ;D Cut aways of drawing bow, nocking area, attaching release, etc. Some say they don't like it and want "the real story" and the actual real hunt in real time, and that is preferred if it happens just right, but to add some entertainment value or variety they add in the cut aways later, this just makes for easier watching. I don't mind cut aways if done in a truly tasteful manner and not something ridiculous and unbelievable. In the real world, it unfolds just exactly as it does for anyone else on stand!!! Movement will pick off deer just like anyone else!! So I will say, a successful bow hunt on video is TOUGH!! There is one more person to potentially give away the position, and one more possible scent to eliminate, etc. So those that do successfully video a bow hunt, you've got to give them props!! ;D

Sure wish the penned "hunters" were required to air a disclaimer at the beginning of the show and after every commercial....kind of like the "impact shot" notice you see on ESPN.

Entertainment purposes only.......many fine shows out there and many terrible shows.
Yeah, them deer behind that 3,000 acre pen in Texas are tame animals and know nothing of surviving in the wild.

Yep, and Ted Nugent who you quote does that type of hunting in Michigan and in Texas! It is sad that they do hunt that way and in some cases they let you know that they are hunting in that situation. I met Hank Parker in Florida turkey hunting this past spring and he did a fund rasing type of hunt in PA last year that was a pen hunt but he didn't put the hunt on TV becasue Hank Jr and Billy agreed that they wouldn't support this type of hunting for DVD or TV, I have a lot of respect for them doing so.

It is almost all shot after the hunt. I actually watched a hunting show on TV yesterday and a guy shot a 170inch 8 pointer in Jan in Illinois. When he tried to drag the buck for a better camera shot one of the antlers broke off at the base. It was pretty funny seeing the look on his face.

Since the day hunting went to TV, vs. when you could only get it on VHS, the educational aspect (how to) on deer hunting has went to "0". Its all about "look at me and what I can do with this X bow, X broadhead, X treestand, and X clothing"!!! There are very few shows on TV now that are designed to help a hunter out. Gene and Barry Wensel probably had THE most informative videos for the time. As a matter of fact, I go back and watch a lot of their old stuff, just to refresh. The Drury's are about the only show I can stand to watch now, although they product pimp a bunch also.

So you think a 3000 acre ranch is a "Pen" and did not see my sarcasm..... Bellar said almost the same thing. Kept saying it right up to the day they took him to jail I think. He seemed like a kind of sarcastic guy too now that I think about it.
