I had a buddy just give me a nice Hang On stand but I have never used one before. I have always used a climbing stand or ladder stand. What is the best way to get the stand up and hang it?

Talk a buddy into doing it.
Seriously though .... the way I do it ....
Once the tree is chosen I attach my climbing sticks a section at a time to the desired height.
Once that is done I tie a rope to the stand and climb to the top of the sticks.
Attach my safety line to the tree.
Screw a single step into the tree roughly where I want the support bar of my stand to go.
Pull the stand up using the rope.
Hang the stand on the step ..... dont make the mistake of thinking it will stay there forever though.
Wrap my straps around the tree and tighten the stand up.
I wouls still rather talk a buddy into doing it though ...... mine are steel, heavy, unbalanced, awkward and just an all around pain in the butt to hang.
I still manage to hang/move a dozen or so stands each year though.
If you are going to put it into a straight tree some guys will use a climber to hang the stand and then bring the steps to the stand after it is hung.

Climbing Stix, Safety Harness, Handline, Roller Block, & Choker Rope if is one of the bigger heavier models. If it's a light one just hang it over your shoulder & all that you will need is the harness & choker rope.

I take my extension ladder in and do it. I put two ratchet straps on it and change them out every year. I use old TV antenas for my ladders.

Alway make sure you climbing sticks are a section or so above your stand so you can step down onto the stand instead of stepping up to it. Alot easier and safer

I use climbing sticks and hang ons a lot, but it can be a bit hairy to hang the stand while standing on the sticks.
My very favorite set up is to use a cheap ladder stand and then a hang on stand. I like to place the platforms at close to the same height. This allows you to increase your radius of shooting angles by having a lot more platform space to use when you are hunting alone, and better yet, it makes a great two man stand for taking your wife, kids, or if your hunting buddy and you want to try to film a hunt. It is a really good set up and gives you lots of options.

something i found helpful when hanging stands from a stick or even treesteps is to use a linemans belt this way your attached to the tree and your hands are free. makes putting up a stand alot easier

A bull rope & a slip knot works well also......
