Saw a program on the Outdoor Channel awhile back where some fellows were hunting squirrels with a small dog. Dog would tree the critter and the hunters would circle the tree until one could get a shot.
Looked like fun. Anyone here ever hunt this way? parson

i have, in the late season with no leaves on trees, i had a jack -russle terrier(name max) that was top notch squirrel dog, he done better if we sit and watch (he had excellant eyes for movement),when he spot a fox or grey squirrel, it was hard to keep him back ,so let go and he would go to the tree and bark and bark ,til i come and squezze a .22 off. the squirrel is more concern where the dog is at ,than the hunter is, this is a big sport in southern indiana and kentucky, my grand father also had a squirrel dog, i believe it was a fox terrier. this is what triggered me to get involved, lots of fun...............turkey scout

A guy down the road, a retired ICO, has several squirrel dogs. I believe they're GSP's.

I used to go with a fellow that had Mt. curs it was a lot of fun but you have to be quick to the trees before the squirrels start jumping. I have been with curs and feist both are good and fairly easy to train curs are a little friendlier than feist

I have a beagle mix who is fantastic at finding squirrels. She doesn't really bark though....she locks onto their scent and tries to climb the tree that they are in.

I've got 2 six month old Mnt. Feist that are out of some pretty awesome bloodlines. Guy down the road has several and that's all he does. Not a better hunt in the state of IN than going in the woods w/ a good squirrel dog. It's basically like coon huntin during the day but alot more fun w/ alot more action!

tobias, todd and others....I would love to see some pictures of your squirrel dogs if you will post them. I have a Mountain Feist (modified as I was censored for trying to say that she is a FEMALE canine) that is a ball to hunt with this time of year (after leaf-fall). She is 10 years old now but hasn't slowed down much....she HATES squirrels!!!Thanks for any pictures you can post!

The best thing about Feist is that they are awesome tree dogs and even better pets! You can have them as a huntin buddy and still bring them in the house at night! They are a very loyal breed.........they are alot like labs. Smart, obedient, and very loyal.

Pup is 6 months now but these little dogs have are so intelligent that it doesn't take long for them to figure out what they were bred to do. Best thing is that there isn't a whole lot of training to do besides basic obedience. Just put them in the woods and they start figuring it out.

Great dogs tobias! You are right about them being easily trained and great in the house too. Mine learned quickly what she was put on this Earth for (especially with a squirrel feeder right outside a glass door at the house)!!! Thanks for posting and have fun hunting them!

They'll have supplies for sale, and I'm sure they'll have a few pups & dogs there for sale. Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Looks like a blast. But then again, most things are more enjoyable with a good dog around.

We went out yesterday and brought home 8. I think we treed 12 times........we had a blast! The pup is catchin on. She's not treeing yet but she's looking up and just about caught her first one on the ground. It doesn't sound like alot but getting a dog looking up and seeing it's first squirrel actually up in a tree is a big deal. After she got after the one on the ground it was almost like a light bulb went off in her head. I don't know if there's anything better than watching a young dog start putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

Had another great day w/ the dogs today! We got pretty wet w/ the snow/rain but it was well worth it. Made a squirrel soup today that was killer too!!!!!
If you've never been in the woods w/ a good squirrel dog you've got to give it a try!

Feist and Curs are probably the best. Some do hunt w/ hounds and I've heard of some other breeds too. You almost have to have a dog that has treeing bred into them though......IMO.
As far as being hard to train them............it's not if you've got a good bloodline and breed. You just have to put them in the woods. Instinct will start taking over and they'll start figuring out what they were put here for.
