A really nice buck was hit by a car this morning and I removed the antlers after I contacted a CO. Does anyone know what needs to be done to preserve the velvet? I don't want it to rot, or dry and crack. Any advice would be appreciated.

I know some people have them freeze dried and there are injections some people shoot into the horns. I've heard of some guys using Formaldihide. I would contact your local taxidermist and they could tell what to do. We used to carry the stuff to inject the horns while we were archery hunting the high country but I can't remember what it was called. Hope this helps.

I found a velvet antler on the side of the road last summer that was broken off of a road kill. I hung it under the back porch and it just kind of dried out. The velvet is still there and it looks pretty much like it did the day I found it.

Take it to a taxidermist, don't try home remedies if you want to save it.

Soak rack in methanol completely submerged for 2 weeks, remove let dry. I did this to an 8 ptr over 20 yrs years ago, still looks great.

A really nice buck was hit by a car this morning and I removed the antlers after I contacted a CO. The CO told you to just take the rack? ..... and not take the whole deer? Did he write you a tag for the deer?

The deer was obliterated (except the antlers, only a few scratches) and in the edge of a field, so he wrote me a permit and allowed me to take only the antlers. There wasn't any salvageable meat from the animal.
