What caliber rifle would you recommend for hunting deer here in Indiana. I have a ENCORE muzzle loader and would like to purchase a legal rifle barrel. I don't like slug guns and I am getting tired of cleaning the muzzle loader every 2 or 3 shots while sighting it in. My average deer shot is about 50 yards.

.44 Magnum.
Cheap to shoot.
Easy on the shoulder.
Will easily double (and more) the length of your average shot if necessary.

I agree with the 44 mag or sell the Encore and buy a Savage 10 ML II muzzleloader. The Savage will shoot smokeless powder so you dont need to clean it until the end of the season. h.h.

Hard to argue with a 44. If you reload the 45LC can be turned into a nice one and if you want to add a little more range the 357Max would be a dandy. I may order a 357Max carbine barrel myself one of these days.

Of those who recommend the 44MAG have any of you ever shot a deer with it. How was penetration, organ damage ect. What would you say is the max.accurate kill range.

Personally, I would go with the 44. Plenty big enough, and reasonably cheap. A good friend of mine who is a C.O. bought a .500 rifle, and loves it, but too me, heavy recoil and high ammo prices is the reason to move away from the slugger in the first place.

Recoil with my 500 carbine is not bad at all - I do have a heavy barrel and a good brake. Reloading helps on the ammo price, however I can't deny you're not going to load it as cheaply as a 44.

You know, if money were no object and I could have whatever I want, I'd get a heavy barrel on every shootin' iron. It really helps on my Ultra Slugster...probably cuts the recoil by at least third when compared to the light barreled gun or a pump. Helps me to aim steady as well.

The .44 Magnum (factory loaded ammo) will take Deer sized game out to around 100 yards with proper bullet placement. Most shots are taken well under 100 yards, more like <75 yards. I have taken four Deer with my .44 Magnum Ruger M-77/44 all one shot kills average range was 60 yards. My most supprising shot was I bagged TWO Deer with one shot!! The Doe I was shooting at had another Deer on her opposite side. the bullet when through her and throught the other Deer. Range was 40 yards.

I love my 44 mag.I shot my first buck with it last year at about 85 yards. The first time i hit him it broke a park of his neck, and the second time it shredded the top of his lungs. I am in love with it

I've shot dozens of deer with a Marlin model 1894 chambered in the .44 caliber round. It all comes down to shot placement. If you hit them right they drop within eyesight. If you don't, be ready to do some tracking. The .44 round doesn't seem to destroy as much meat as some of the rifles chambered with traditional rifle rounds.
