I was drawn for Crane Naval 3rd day military refuge gun hunt. I've never been on a refuge hunt and have a few questions I hope somebody here can answer ?
#1. Can you get on the property ahead of time to scout and set stands?
2. Has the property been hunted the prior 2 days and if so how much pressure has it seen?
3. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as a decent area to hunt or is it all about the same?
4. I would like to take my son, who will be 15, but does he have to hunt along side me or can he be set up by himself?
Thanks for your responses, much appreciated! Copper1
I forgot to mention it is on December 6th

I have to pick an area from a map. The areas are numbered 1-35.

You won't get to scout. Unless you have some good connections there. Use Google earth to check out the areas. I've done that then loaded it into my GPS. Works very well.
I think the 3rd hunt is the 3rd saturday of hunts.
Workers there and military people will be hunting when the season opens.
I hunted there numerous times. I alwats try a new area. I wait and go in when light then find an area and good tree to hunt out of.

I haven't ever hunted crane, but at big oaks they welcome youth hunters. My son shot his second buck there. He was set up alone. There will probably be no scouting that is why we always hunt the same area learn something new every year. We feel like we know our area pretty well after 5 years.

NO SCOUTING, thats the bad part. The last time My Dad and I hunted it we were in area 13? It was brushy, but had a lot of deer sign. I took a doe that evening in a DEEP hollow. What a drag out. GOOD LUCK to you and your Son.
