Well, I went out yesterday evening to try and get a squirrel for a disabled friend who had mentioned he'd like one. I was kind of nervous I'd see a deer ( don't like to tromp around too much right before season) I enter the woods not far from my stand, on a a ridge top covered by a narrow strip of woods. On one side is a pasture, on the other side is a very deep ravine. Right away I hear a few sticks snap just over the edge. Crap! Soon enough I see antlers floating over the edge. The buck's rack was weird, featuring what I thought at first was two long spikes stretching at least 10-12 inches over his head. They were nearly straight up! As he stopped to munch an acorn, I could see brow tines and a fork right at the end of the beams. By the body I'd say he was 1 1/2. I was hoping he would continue on his way without seeing me , but I was skylined bad, and he pegged me. He might be young but he's not stupid, as he froze and watched me at about 15 yards. I finally ended the standoff by twitching my gun barrel. The youngster immediately vaulted over the edge of the ravine.
That really gets your blood pumping!
Before I left, I had hesitated at the driveway, foot on the brake, thinking, You should go back inside and get the camera...
I did get a big fox squirrel a short time later with my twelve guage.
