I went out hunting this evening with Crazy Canuck (Dan) in the spot I saw a small 6 pointer on opening day. After sitting a few hours Dan saw the buck slipping up between where he and I were positioned in a woodlot. A bit earlier I had seen a nice buck feeding 80-100 yards away from me, but I lost track of where he went. I heard a stick pop and turned my head to discover a NICE buck walking right at me, the only problem was I was eye-to-eye with the buck and he was coming up from my 7'o clock position. By the time I saw the deer he was less than 20 yards away and I had no cover between he and I. When he lowered his head I stood and turned toward him...... his head was still down as I came to full draw, but that's where my luck ran out. He threw his head up and gave me the death stare. I had a tree about 4-5 inches across that was direct between me and his heart. I was just easing my head to line up a shot that would skim past the tree and still get vitals when he turned and bolted. The commotion kicked up a few more deer that were in Dan's part of the woods....but everything scattered away from us.
The buck was a good one. His right side was larger than the left and he had one of those racks that seemed to grow straight up. He looked like a mainframe 8, but he had all kinds of crap coming off both sides. I'm glad the encounter was fairly instant, because if I had seen him coming I would have been a wreck. As it was I dang near pulled off the shot..... He probably was only a 120" deer, but all the garbage made him look gnarley!!!
I'm letting the woods sit, and sneaking back in on Tuesday AM with my climber. That's two close calls with bucks in 2 nights. Hopefully I can connect on Tuesday morning.
