Well I got drawn for a gun hunt at Big Oaks NWR. since they don't allow pre-hunt scouting I just wanted to get some imput on tactics guys use to hunt this property. I got some ideas of my area from google earth and topo maps. trying to decide if I should ground hunt in A.M. scout mid-day and treestand hunt P.M. or set up blind and hope for the best. Thanks a lot for input. Good luck to everyone, and be safe.

Depending on the area you hunt......I would do everything possible to be up in a tree when ever you are deer hunting no matter if its morning or afternoon.
Study your google maps and remember the deer will be attempting to escape all the deer hunters in there.
Just keep in mind, it's a REAL deer hunt not a gimmie like when it was JPG.

if you have never been in the area, i would wait till daylight to go in, no need to push out the deer before the hunt, if you wait you might get a shot at one just walking in. i always hunt out of a stand, as the area`s you will see deer are usally thick and you want to be about that looking down into the thickets. go slow find a good spot and setup, i usally stay all day, so i take food, water, anything else i need.. good luck..

I work with a group of guys who always kill deer at big oaks every year. I am not sure what areas they hunt or which ones are the best but I know they always have success.

A strategy a good friend of mine uses is to pick a ridge along some obvious travel corridor, like a creek bottom, and let other's push the deer to him. Often times there will be hunters in the areas surrounding yours, forcing the deer to move. This is my plan for the Nov. 2nd hunt. Make no mistake there are far more monsters there than average, simply because of the vastness of the area. I'm fully convinced that some Big Oaks bucks live and die without ever seeing a human up close. I saw photos from the first hunt last time I was there. Some big deer, lemme tell ya. When I was going in for orientation, two dudes were loading up a big ten on some of the private acreage inside the fence owned by a local tycoon.
