Anyone else seeing signs of an early rut?
Seen several scrapes this weekend. I think the cooler than normal temps here in IN has brought the rut on a couple of weeks early. I had a 140" 4 1/2 year old within about 10yards of me this weekend that's neck was really swelled.
Real tempted to make that shot but I am holding out for the big boy, I keep seeing and has just not offered me a bow shot on yet. he is in the low 170's and I am guessing around 5 to 6 years old.
My luck I will walk away with nothing this year. I hate the OBR!!!!

Temperature won't bring the rut early but it will increase the intensity. Sounds like what everyone is seeing is about normal.

The buck I shot last night had a swollen neck and he smelled a little rutty, but no staining of the tarsal glands yet..We're in the pre-rut stage right now, by the first week of November things will be turning on big time...I think it's gonna be a little early..week and half early this year..Everything is early this year..and so will the rut..

Breeding will take place the same general time every year but the cooler temps will get the bucks up and moving earlier. Heard some chasing and a grunt this morning. I am seeing no scrape activity and very few rubs.

The young bucks are half-heartedly marking their turf / advertising & the does are not interested in them like normal for this time of the year. Give em another 2 weeks and the chase will begin.......

Was out Friday night and saw a buck chasing some does in the field. They didn't want anything to do with him, but was fun watching him chase them around. Saw a few scrapes, but not rubs yet.

Rut is controlled by the hours of daylight and kicks in the same time each year. Deer become more active with colder weather and that is what you are seeing. h.h.

Found some fresh scrapes and set up some mocks to see what happens,,haven`t found any rubs yet. The crops are still in the fields where I hunt so maybe this week he can get them out and turn up the action a little. I think the pre rut will be a little heavier with the cool weather, the rut will be pretty close to the same time maybe a few days early depending on the moon.

Talked to my friend in KY last night; he said he had a buck chasing last weekend. He said he's seen 1 good buck so far - a 10pt. so I'm assuming this was a young one.

Had two little guys sparring about 50 yards from me this morning. Went at it off and on for over 30 minutes. Sure was entertaining.

He put that buck at 3.5 years and he's killed a pile of deer over the years so I'm betting he has that one correct. All the other bucks he's seen have been young ones and he's seen a boatload of does - which for that property doesn't surprise me. That property there would make a good case study - He, his boys and myself hunt this place. Mostly 2.5 & 3.5 year old bucks get harvested; he probably takes a doe a year and I take 1 or 2 does and that's about it for the gals. It really needs some does taken out. You see a small smattering of 2.5+ year old bucks, several 1.5 year old ones and does galore.......Hmmmmm how would you all say the deer hunting there could be improved? I've seriously considered (but haven't decided to!) leaving the deer on my place alone for Magnum (unless it's a good one) forget about bucks down there and concentrate on taking 3 or 4 does out of there this year - at least do my part.

Most bucks are just taking inventory in my area, but I have noticed the does are a little more on edge. The big boys should start showing up more often to show their dominance this week or next. I would say the first or second week of Nov as normal for the rut.
Some does do come into heat early if they lost a fawn etc over the summer so I wouldn't be surprised to see a buck chasing one doe. For an example go to your local bar one night and observe. If she is willing a guy looking will not pass up an opportunity.

I had a 140" 4 1/2 year old within about 10yards of me this weekend that's neck was really swelled. You're seeing scrapes made during the "pre-rut" or "false rut" phase, and as said, some does go into heat early (part of nature's way of protecting the species) and this early estrous fires up the bucks for a time, then things settle back down. Lots of perimeter scrapes will start appearing, but it's just the boys playing around bored with no more hot does... when you start seeing big primary scrapes in the woods in the coming weeks, you'll know things are starting to get serious and the bucks will start trolling for does in earnest... Lots of books and articles talk about pre-rut in early October, but since it's the presence of an early doe in a given area that triggers the bucks hot flash, my guess is it can probably happen any time from 2nd to 3rd week in October, so you may be seeing action now whereas someone else might have seen activity a week or so ago... 28 days after that, all heck will break loose...
