I was drawn for last weekend's archery hunt at BO and chose area 7. The terrain was mixed with tight cover all the way to open ridges along a medium sized creek. We decided to hunt the creek and had to walk an hour to reach it. I had high hopes for this hunt, but was quite dissapointed. At 10:00 after not seeing a single animal we decided to move. We hunted till 2:00 and didn't see anything. We decided to walk around and look for sign. We couldn't find a single track, rub, scrape, scat, or run. Only 2 other hunters checked in deer that day. We decided to leave and go hunt my uncles 70 acre farm that night. We both saw several deer and I took a nice doe. I'm not sure what to think. We saw 3 groups of deer outside the fence on our drive out, but nothing inside. Has anyone had any real luck in there? Are there any deer in that place?

Sorry you had bad luck! Back when the military ran the place, the population got really out of hand. I guess a deer was pretty much a guarentee.
The place still has plenty of deer.... the problem is, it's huge, so it's hard to know where to go. In one spot there might be a zillion of them, and a mile away, nothing. A buddy of mine that has hunted it for years says the hunting varies greatly from area to area. He and his buddies score on nice bucks fairly regularly. We didn't get a deer last time, but we saw some, and lots of sign. Thank goodness I can pick him for a partner, or I wouldn't know what to do. I have high hopes for this year. The thing I keep in mind is that the odds of seeing a huge buck are much greater.
The spottiness of the deer concentration is apparent when driving along the fence, which I often do. When coming back toward Madison, you see the vast majority of the deer milling around before you reach the main entrance, and a few right after. But for the next few miles until the property ends, you almost never see a deer. Why? Who knows. Driving that fence at sunset in the summer can be a shocker. You see some big bucks wandering around. Last week, during the day, a big coyote was loping down the main road by the fence in broad daylight.

I've had pretty good success in BO, but I have gone days and not seen any deer. I took 2 out of there last year, and hunted 3 days.
