Great buck, would think if it was a hunter that buck would be dead. The wound is in a great spot not to kill it if it was from an arrow. Maybe fighting wound, really hard to say.

Interesting. Almost looks like an old broadhead wound that should have ended that that bucks career, but??? Maybe the buck was severly quartering away and it was basically a meat shot?? Dunno...thats odd. Guess it could be an old battle wound also, from another buck. Whatever the situation...I bet you that dude is alot wiser from having lived through it!
If I had to bet on it, I would go with the severe quartering away shot that just got meat and no vitals.

Couldn't say. Deer are super tough animals so it could be anything. Maybe the deer is old and going bald.

I would think any arrow punch in that area would kill a deer unless it was a glancing blow. My guess is flesh wound from fighting.

On another forum someone posted pics of a doe with an arrow hanging out in almost the same spot and eating at a pile of corn. Dave

lloks like he was batteling with another buck looks like spot on his neck as well
My buddy killed a nice buck last week and when he skinned it there was several antler hole in the ham and side of his buck I'd say that is what happened to that buck as well
it is that time of the year
just FYI , it's not wise to get on a public forum an say that other hunters are shooting and wounding deer all over the state I mean sure it might happen but it's rare and it really isn't for public knowledge is you know what I mean Not a good look guys

Definatlety not an arrow wound...antler tine pucture wound from fighting...it look superficial didn't even penetrate the first couple layers of skin...an arrow would be still in him, and /or blood runnig down his side etc....I say it's a fighting wound too, could be a small abcess from a thorne or something he's been licking on possibly, but doubt seriously it from an arrow.

Antler. 3-4 days old maybe longer. Have seen mechanicals that don't open and hit shoulder bone not penetrate but they don't make a wound that large. That is a rib bone showing and most arrows would have penetrated. Unless it was a very badly underpowered bow. Even back in the 70's shooting a 37 lb re curve with those broad heads penetration was much deeper. Killing actually. This is a fighting wound. Trying to turn away and got hammered.

looks to me like it is a old broadhead wound also. Maybe but not sure it could also possibly be from fighting. Either way its a brute and worth chasing this season
