Do I ruin all my carefully orchestrated scent control measures when I open up my thermos of coffee in my tree stand when 8:00 am rolls around?

Your breath will do the same once you drink that coffee, stop obsessing over it.

If a smart deer is in the right spot, it will smell you no matter what. Drink your coffee and enjoy yourself.

Play the wind and try to stay as scent free as possible.
BUT..
The wind HATES me and I hate it. It seems like every time I finally get to hunt a stand I want to because the wind is right, the wind changes it's mind once I am in the stand. It will blow every which way but the right way. The wind is a WOMAN.
One thing about playing the wind (if you are buck hunting) is that you have to play the wind right for where the deer are going once they pass you. A doe way out in front of a buck passing by you can get down wind of you and blow your cover before the buck gets in range.
I've got a few stands that deer can come from any direction, so "playing the wind" there is futile.

I'll always take the spray bottle of scent control stuff with me and re apply every couple of hours. Don't know if makes any difference but sure don't think it will hurt. As for the coffee-there is a fence post that my coffe mug usually goes on when I walking in and hopefully I'll remember to pick it up on the way back out. Tried to take coffee with me but it always seemed to just get in the way but then I don't usually hunt from stands either.

it probally bothers the deer as bad as people say my dipping does. a guy told me 2 weeks ago that they can smell the wintergreen 200 yards away. with that being said, i had a doe eat the used wad of dip off the ground that very night. if they dont know or cant put the smell to be a predetor it doesnt seem to bother them.

I've chewed for years and it has'nt stoped me from killing deer, although i spit in a bottle and take it out with me. i also wear rubber boots with a scent loc clothes, and spray down with the stuff every so often. I have killed mature bucks. The wind game is tough to figure out, as it seems to change always, Just like today, it was swirrling, and getting some South to it warm weather is comming?

A couple of years back, I was in a ground setup blind with camo burlap, opened up the thermos and was warming up my cup of coffee, raised back up and had a young doe sniffing through the opening in the burlap... in retrospect, I think the coffee was a new "foody" smell, and she was checking it out...
I'm a firm believer in the theory that smells in and of themselves isn't a bad thing unless a given deer has experienced that scent before and associated it with humans/hunters... I've heard of guys smoking swisher sweet cigars while in a tree stand and having bucks walk in downwind clearly checking the scent, and similar deals with guys chewing cherry flavored Hall's cough drops... deer are generally curious creatures, if scents smell like they might be food...
