I was on stand at 2pm this afternoon after a morning hunt where I saw a nice 2 1/2 yo eight point absolutely dogging a doe. I would've loved to stick that doe as she was bigger than he was, but they skirted my stand at 60 yards. I wasn't optimistic for the afternoon since the temps were near 70 with 15-20 mph winds. I was hunting a recently logged (last Oct) block of timber which I scouted two days ago. Long story short a little forkie freshened a scrape about 25 yards from my tree then walked 10 yards broadside. Now damn, why can't a masher do that. About 20 minutes later in the middle of the cut over I saw the buck I ended up killing. He was 80 yards away. I got him to stop with a grunt, but despite any of my other calls (snort wheeze, can call) he just stood there for 45 minutes not moving a muscle. He ended up leaving eventually with his nose to the ground in cruiser mode. The thing I noticed first was his very nice rack as well as very small throat patch. He ended up exiting my block of timber and crossing a grass crp field and into another smaller block of timber 300 yards away. Lucky for me he found a doe which ran my direction. She hung up about 60 yards from me and he stayed with her despite my best imitation of a buck about to take away his girlfriend. About 20 minutes before end of shooting light they started moving towards me again and he gave me a 30 yard broadside shot through a small hole. As you'll see I got a deflection and hit him high in the back in front of the ham. The impact didn't sound like the normal thunk of the arrow hitting a deers chest. However I could see blood SPRAYING!!! He went down in 30 yards, but managed to get back up and run another 100 before going down for good. My legs started to do the Elvis special. When I found out where I hit him I gave a small thanks for getting very lucky! All total I had my eyes on this buck for over two hours. Every time I thought I was going to get a shot my heart thundered and I turned inside out.
ANyway, I think he's my first P&Y buck.I think he'll go 125-130 or so? I'm no scorer, so it'll be a very rough score LOL
I couldn't really care about score as he's my best buck to date with my bow. 10 scoreable points. He was trying to become a twelve with tiny crab claws a the end of the main beams.
Sorry about the tongue and blood. I will get some better pics tomorrow.
