I took the slug gun and the Ruger Carbine to Red Brush Rifle Range to sight in.
The slug gun has a rifled cantilever barrel that comes off and is replaced with another cantilever barrel for turkey season. So it is a must to check zero each time.
Fortunately they have never lost zero in the exchange. My group was 2" high at 50 yards and touching each other. This is my Illinois slug gun.
I had changed out the scope mounts and had repositioned my scope on the Ruger so it took a little more doing. Fortunatley it doesnt have near the kick as the slug gun. ;D
I've got it 2" high at 50 yards too. 1" group.
I'm ready..

At 2" high at 50 yards that puts you rightOn at ? Both should be pretty well dead on at 100 yards, which is about as far as I want to shoot..

I've looked at quite a few 44, ML and Slug ballistics tables. Quite often a 125 yds zero is optimal, and that puts most about 2" high at 50 and about 3" low at 150. Anything between 0 and 150, aim and squeeze.

Well I got my 870 out Monday.......took a look through the scope only to discover it was BROKE! This scope has been on this gun for over 15 years.......... Went to Greenwood and bought a new scope, put it on the gun and went yesterday to scope in. These are all the shots I took and all are at 75 yards! I never touched the windage! Am I lucky or what?

I'm probably not a good one to answer as I just put in using what Timex told me to do. I thought it was all one season, just split up? NRs can hunt the entire season. I'll be there November 20 - 22 and again December 3 - 6 (if I don't tag out the first part).

I need to find some of that WWB ammo for my Contender carbine. No one out here has it in stock! Rifle season started here today, but it will be this weekend before I can get out. I'll probably be toting the 7x57 Mauser. Assuming the closing on our house in Indiana happens the week of Thanksgiving, I'm hoping to have 2-3 days to hunt before heading back here. I'll definitely need to find some WWB before then. I tried some handloads in my .44 last weekend, but the results were less than stellar. I need to play around with it some more (need different primers I think), but the WWB groups less than 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Good luck to all this weekend! I'm hoping to see a buck (no does allowed in the unit I'll be hunting), getting a shot at one will be a bonus. Considering I've only seen 3 deer since we moved (and one was about 40 feet from being hit with the truck the other night!!), actually seeing deer will be fine with me right now.

ridgerunner:
Non-res can hunt both first and second season in Illinois. NR just get to fill in the holes in counties where residents did not fill them. I am not hunting Illinois this year, but usually hunt in Crawford County near Palestine when I do. In past 8 seasons putting in for my either sex, I got drawn each year. The number of tags remaining for each county (and types available: Either Sex or Doe) for non-residents to fill is the limiting factor. Some counties will have very few of them for a NR to slide into.
What is limited to Illinois Residents only is the first lottery/drawing for tags in each of the counties. NR can apply for their tag in that drawing.
