22 .. headshots .. also allow for some longer shot as compare to shotgun.

.22 for me but I used to love taking my little single shot .410 out when I was a kid.

I hope no one is using a .223! When I lived in Indiana, I have used: light loaded .22 Hornet, .222 Rem., and my Winchester Model 43 bolt action in .25-20. Now, here in KY, we can only use rimfires for Squirrels. Here I use my CZ AMERICAN Classic in .22 LR or my 20 gauge Browning Gold.

started with a .410 Beretta my dad bought me at 13...went to a Marlin 60 in 22 and finally a Ruger 77/17 rifle. Now use a 17HMR Contender pistol and have recently gotten a 21 inch Contender carbine barrel that my son wants to use since I sold the Ruger. Here is a pic of a squirrel day from a couple years ago...the pistol definitely adds a degree of difficulty and requires that you really sneak up and wait for that perfect shot opportunity. The bonus is that the pistol and can accurately shoot over 100 yards...if you can get a clean shot that far out with no branches in the way.

I am thinking one gray and one half gray/half sneaky neighbor red...as you can see it has some mixed up coloration...no idea past that....I just know they all taste the same!!! LOL

it depends on the day, if I have my .22, i usually wish I had my 12 gauge. If i have my 12 gauge, I usually wish I had my .22
