I don't know the reason, it is probably a combination of a lot of things, not the least of which is a great year for nutrition but...
I will tell you this, there seems to have been an INCREDIBLE number of big bucks taken in Indiana this year. I picked up my deer meat from my buck today in Brookville and I stopped by the 52 pickup and looked at their picture board...boys I am telling you, there were AT LEAST 15 deer on there bigger than the one I killed (152 inches). I had to search for a few minutes to even find my buck up there because he just didn't stand out much. I have NEVER seen anything like that in previous years. There are a minimum of 20+ bucks on that picture board that will qualify for the HRBP book. And that is just for one check station!
I stopped by my taxidermist to show my wife and daughter my buck's rack and he had a 200 inch deer in there. It was the most massive rack I have ever seen in person. It didn't have a whole lot of tine length, but it had a bunch of points and it had 7.5 inch bases and unbelievable mass all the way out.
Unfortunate thing about that buck is that it had DNR papers with it. Taxidermist said that it had probably been shot from the road and died on this guy's property. The owner had to get special permission to keep the antlers. He was having a European mount done.
For whatever reason, this appears to be a watershed year for the Hoosier state. I hope this doesn't put us "on the map" with the Illinois', Ohio's, and Iowa's of the world, where out of state outfitters buy up everything in sight and sell hunts to people from God knows where, but I fear this isn't far away. Michael Waddel killed his biggest buck ever in Indiana last year, I am afraid the cat is out of the bag!
