if a flint lock they dont use caps if a side lock you can heat the hammerlock and bend it so it strikes flusher that should work.

Okay....a flintlock uses a piece of flint and a striker to make spark to ignite the powder through a flash hole in the side of the barrel Since you say you are using a cap I will assume you are really using #11 caps on a sidehammer muzzleloader... With this in mind, if you do not know how to work on this weapon have someone make sure that your hammer spring is not broken and that the action is properly installed. Past that I would not know what to tell you without having the rifle in my hands. After you get it working, would you rather switch that to a 209 primer?? These guys sell an adapter that goes on sidehammers to allow the use of 209 primers. www.warrencustomoutdoor.com/pl-spark-start.html#mag-spark

It sounds like the nipple may be the problem. Dry firing will mushroom it out and make a cap hard to seat. The fix is to remove the nipple and spin it in a drill and file it to fit the cap. The "to clicks to fire" is just the first click seating the cap, the second fires it. You have enough spring, just need better cap nipple interface.

I had the same issue with my Bobcat a few years back; sent it off to CVA and they fixed it no questions asked. They even sent me a prepaid UPS label for shipping. I don't know if they install a new spring; but, the nipple they installed was a bit taller than the original one.

First, I would inspect the nipple. If it is worn as mentioned above, either fix it with a file or replace it. You could install a "hot-shot" style nipple, they are supposed to get more flame into the chamber and they are a bit taller. Next I would remove the lock (very easy to do) and clean it of all crud/rust or whatever may be in there.
When I put the cap on the nipple, I very carefully lower the hammer onto the cap and push it down with firm pressure to seat it fully on the nipple. Mine is a little worn too, but if I seat it this way it always fires, and the cap also never falls off the nipple. I have to remove it with a knife or a key.

I have an older inline CVA Eclipse. This season i got it out of the safe for the first time in over 5 years, the bolt that slams into the #11 cap was in the cocked position, why it was left like that is beyond me, but anyhow, it would take the bolt a couple times of hitting the cap before the cap would go off. I pulled the spring out and installed 4 half inch washers on the back side of the spring, and it now fires on the first shot everytime. Thank goodness that worked, i checked all over evansville today for a nipple wrench for this gun, and cant find one anywhere. My son is excited as all get out that he will be able to extend his season, using this. Hopefully it will make him a better hunter, knowing that he has this one shot.

I just use a 1/4" drive ratchet and I believe a 5/16 socket to remove the nipple. Haven't done it in a while but it works nicely. You might have to try a couple sizes but it does work.
