During the peak rut this year I saw a mature 10 pt. buck do something that I have never seen before.
With the odd-ball winds & temps we had this year 5 deer that I presume were does had bedded-down under one of my morning stands during the rain the previous evening / early AM as all 5 beds were dry as a bone when I discovered them when it got light. Around 9:00AM this heavy racked 10 pointer is out on the prowl sniffing everything as he is browsing young sapling twigs & leaves when he trips across the deer beds & perks-up. He sniffs each bed, licks each bed, licks his nose flemening each bed scent, urinates on his hocks on each bed, & spent an hour intensely checking-out every inch of the ridge before heading down one of the main deer trails on the ridge.
It was pretty cool watching him work & watch the briar thickets from the downwind side so he did not have to dive into the briars.
Pretty cool!

Cool! One of the best things about hunting is seeing things like this!

It seems like the big ones do this once they know where the does are bedding. I have seen them nudge them up and smell where they were laying. Something to see for sure.

yes those backstraps would have made excellent meals during the youth hunt next year!! Ha Ha I'm sure Blake would have been up early to help you prepare them!! Sounds like a good morning in the woods though!! ;D ;D

They live by their nose. You understand about concealing your ground scent when you see that kind of action.

its always cool to see new things. This year I saw things Ive never seen in the woods. I saw and heard my first legit buck fight. If you rattle...your NOT doing it loud enough! Small bucks do rub big trees I watched a yearly 6 pt rub a tree the size of my thigh. Copenhagen does not bother deer. I loosed some onto the back of an unsespecting doe that was smelling the bottom of the tree I was in. A little while later she spent several minutes licking it off her back! All on film I also P'd out of my stand one late morning and had a doe lick the leaves a little later. I actually had several deer, does bucks and fawns smell where I p'd out of my stands and not one spooked or even became alarmed. I had a small buck lick the rungs of my ladder stand. Its been a fun year.

And why do we not have pictures of this mature 10 point? Sadly it was after I had killed the 8 pointer that I have been after.

That's an awesome story as others have stated that is the cool thing about hunting seeing the things you'll never forget and haven't seen before!
