Just curious, but if you guys run across a youth hunter violating the law. How would you handle it? Talk to the youth? Talk to the mentor? Or take the evidence to the CO and hope that you get a feather in your hat by getting a youth into trouble with the law?

I guess it would depend on the violation. For example, if I saw them waterfowl hunting with lead shot, I'd give them some education. If I saw them committing the same mistake after I had educated them, then I'd call the CO in. Now if I saw a youth shoot a deer out of season, load it on a four wheeler and cover it with a tarp, I'd call the CO immediately. He obviously knows he did wrong and was trying to get away with it. $.02

The idea behind youth hunting is to help them learn to hunt and hunt properly. So, yes it would depend on the situation at hand. I had or over heard a comment from one of the mentors at our youth hunt this year that he might take a shot at a deer if he got the chance because he didn't think the youngster could hit his mark from that stand. He was counciled in private about the matter and I'm sure there was not a violation later on. Other than that small incident, I saw no bad behavior out of any of the kids, they just want and need a chance.

Well, my son and I turned ourselves in this year during the youth duck hunt. My son shot a grebe and it was my fault. We didn't even know what grebe's were. The CO gave my son a written warning. He even said that he wouldn't give us a ticket because the youth hunts are to encourage hunting.

I would let them know the law. What they choose to do with that information depends on my reaction.

Back in 07' my son killed two jakes with one shot, sitting in a blind 50yds from me. We drove to check station and explained the situation and they called the CO. After a 2hr wait he showed up, busted our chops for awhile, confiscated one of the birds and let my son off the hook. I think we did the right thing and my son learned a good lesson.

I did the same thing as an inexperienced youth in 1968 at Hovey Lake with an adult who did not know the his ducks. Big difference though as we got ticketed, fined, & talked to very harshly at check-in with quite a few duck hunters present. I have never duck / goose hunted since........

Still today, they are a bunch of a-holes around Hovey Lake.
