I shot a doe tonight at primetime in a cut cornfield, she was in a group of about 7. I had a solid rest, I was inside the woods about 20 yds and shot across the corner of the field. I estimate it around 120yds, maybe alittle more. At the shot smoke filled the air so I lost her for a second, then just saw tails bouncing into the open thicket they were feeding along the edge of. I walked to where she stood and immediately found blood, hair and some tissue. I found maybe 4-5 more spots of blood and a few tufts of hair inside the woods and thats it! This is the firsat deer I have shot in 4 yrs with a gun and the first I have wounded with a gun! What bugs me is the hair at the impact site was white as well as the tuft in the woods. Thats mean low shot, right? Any input?

That's a shame. It happens... Sounds like low hit to me, possibly abdominal. Lots of hair on the inside of the rear leg as well. Maybe a search tommorow?

Sounds like a flesh wound low, give it a look in the morning. A killing low shot would have some more blood usually.

Is there any water in the area, a pond or creek near by. It seem like wounded deer go towards water. When you go out in the morning to look for her, watch for any deer that you kick up. Go to where the deer were bedded. Deer will sometimes bed down with wounded deer. I have helped several people find dead deer by going to where they were bedded after we kicked deer up. Good luck, hope you find her.

I'm not sure where you are at but Indy is listing a current temperature of 22.9 Degrees. ( 6:30 A.M )They are projecting the high temp to be 38 degrees Sunday. As far as I know , the only bacteria that can start growing below 32 degrees are found in artic regions. If your free, go hunting, (keeping an eye out for birdies, maybe?) and then look for her again. If she's taking the dirt nap, you should have plenty of time to take care of her in the morning. A good search may also reveal that you just nicked her. Good luck.

My experience is flesh wounds blead heavy and peter out. Where some deadly hits will blead very little as the blood is internal and won't spill out until the deer is down. I'd look a bit closer today. Good luck.
